A new Amex Offer came out this week that may be useful for some: get $15 back on $100 or more in Happy Cards at HappyCards.com through 12/31/22. Personally, I’m going to sync this one up to convert to a nice discount on brands that aren’t often discounted.

Quick Thoughts

While the discount here isn’t very significant at fifteen bucks, that could nonetheless add up in a multi-player household. My wife and I and a family member less interested in the games we play all have this offer on Amex cards. I actually intend to use this one for Disney Gift Cards for a trip we have planned later this year. While $15 might not move the needle, $45 in savings between the three of us is enough.

As we’ve noted in previous posts, Happy cards essentially work like Visa Gift Cards that are limited to working at the retailers included on the front of the packaging. That means that it is (at least theoretically) possible to use a Happy card to buy anything sold by that retailer. Some of the Happy cards include retailers that sell a wide range of third party gift cards — including my desired Disney cards. Keep in mind that a cashier may see the card and tell you that you can’t buy a gift card with a gift card, but overzealous cashiers aside, it should work.

I noted a $45 savings between three cardholders above, but truthfully that isn’t quite right. We could buy Visa Gift Cards at Sam’s Club for a slight discount (and then stack the Cash app boost on top to save 5% more right now), so in reality the discount here is a bit smaller than it seems. Still, it’s easy enough since we’ll naturally end up at some of the included stores over the next month or two, so this will be an easy one to put to use for some additional savings.

Most stores don’t let you pay for a gift card with a gift card because it’s corporate policy. I don’t think it’s up to the cashier. The computer system will not accept it as payment many places (at least in California). This is largely due to stopping money laundering.

You might want to mention that Happy Cards now come in two types. One works as you describe as a “fenced in” Visa card. However, many now only work for online redemption where you have to go online and select which store(s) you want to get store gift cards from. These store gift cards are far less likely to allow you to purchase gift cards in store. Basically if you see “online redemption” you will be getting a store gift card not a fenced in Visa card.

Another trick here – you could stack this with the Capital One Spring Happy discount code for 6%
