There’s a new Amex Offer out that’s good for $150 back when you spend $800 or more on Fine Hotels & Resorts or The Hotel Collection. This could be a great deal when stacked with the $200 benefit on Amex Platinum cards for a total of $350 back on an $800 booking.

Update: As Chris notes in the comments, it is possible that you’ll have to spend $1,000 to trigger both offers (the $200 Platinum card benefit and the $150 Amex Offer). If you only spend $800, there is a chance that Amex will first credit the $200 Platinum card benefit and then you will not have spent enough to trigger the Amex Offer. Personally, I think they are likely to stack, but it is worth being aware that they may not.

The Deal

  • A new targeted Amex Offer is out on some Platinum cards good for $150 back when you spend $800 or more on Amex Fine Hotels and resorts

Key Terms

  • Expires 12/17/21
  • Only valid for prepaid bookings via Amex Travel for Fine Hotels & Resorts or The Hotel Collection
  • Threshold can be reached in one or more transactions

Quick Thoughts

As a maximizer, most of my Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings are for a single night. I typically find a few situations per year where I can book a single night for less than $200 and get free breakfast for two and a $100 property credit (like our recent stay at the Four Seasons Abu Dhabi). This offer makes such a situation appealing even for a longer stay since you would get nearly half the money back on $800 spend and still get free daily breakfast for two, a local amenity worth $100 (typically a food & beverage credit, though this varies at some properties), and guaranteed 4pm late checkout. This might even appeal to me on a property that would ordinarily be a bit out of my price range thanks to the stack.

I’m not 100% sure that I’ll be able to put this offer to use before it expires, but it certainly might represent a good opportunity for excellent value with low effort, which is a combination I quite enjoy.

Would this work with a stay after the 17th which is after expiry however it is prepaid?

Eric

Anyone try making two separate reservations to take advantage of $100 unique credit at each property and having both reservations go over $800 to get both the $150 AMEX offer credit + $200 amex platinum credit?

Larry K

I have already used my $200 credit but can still cancel the stay to rebook for a stack with this offer. Has anyone cancelled a stay where they received the $200 credit? I assume the credit is clawed back but do you have to fight to get the credit back to re-use it?

Greg The Frequent Miler

In my case it has worked super smoothly and automatically. On one platinum card I booked and cancelled twice and booked again a third time. With each booking I got the $200 credit and with each cancellation, they clawed back the credit (as they should). With the final booking, I got the credit again and kept it.

Sharon

Do you wait for the credit to be clawed back then book, or booking immediately after cancel could still work?

Greg The Frequent Miler

No, I didn’t wait.

Love the blog but can you guys do a better job of noting whether the $200 (and other similar benefits) are calendar year or member year requirements? I don’t see that clarified in this post or the post linked to in this blog. It wasn’t ’til I got to the fourth linked article that I noted that it’s a calendar year benefit (kuddos to you if the secret goal was to increase the click rate!).

Kevin

If you book a stay, get the credits, and then cancel, I’m assuming your credits get clawed back, but I’m wondering if that would preclude your ability to get the credits on another booking? I want to take advantage of this, but I’m afraid to book until my plans are pretty firm because I’m worried this is a one shot deal, even though the rates are refundable.

Greg The Frequent Miler

I’ve booked, cancelled, rebooked a few times and the $200 Platinum credit has come, gone, and come again. I don’t know if the same would be true for the Amex Offer $150 credit though.

On properties that offer the $100 dining credit is that daily or just per stay? if not, would the Amex offer be cumulative (or does the $800 have to be spent in one transaction?)Could you check in and out and book separate reservations to get the $100 credit daily?

Sol Osterkatz

I made a Hotel Collection booking last night on my platinum card with the $150 off $800 offer added. Total was $865.98 and this morning I received the Great news! You recently used your Amex Offer at AMEX HOTEL COLLECTN” email. The $200 platinum travel credit hasn’t yet applied but I’m confident that it will.

Ever Olvera

Did it go through? The $200 credit.

Sol Osterkatz

Yes, it went through without issue.

Anthony

Amex credits of this nature almost always stack. It happens every year with the Marriott credits on the Amex Brilliant. For example, when I have had a spend $250, get $50 Amex offer, and my $300 Marriott credit, and charged a $300 room, a $300 charge appears on my statement, followed by a $300 credit and a $50 credit. It should work exactly the same with these – spend $800, get both the $200 and the $150 credit.

If I book a Hyatt through FHR, am I able to get it to count as a qualifying night? Wondering if you could theoretically stack this with the Andaz 2x night promotion…

Ack, sorry I missed that in the posts – thank you for clarifying here! 🙂

Chris

Wouldn’t you have to spend $1,000 to get the stack to work since Amex will credit the $200 (I assume?) before you complete the reservation?

Alan

Don’t the credits happen outside of the spend? The credit won’t reduce your spend, at least that doesn’t appear to be the case on our statements.

Chris

I hope that’s the case. I haven’t yet used my 200 FHR credit but will be using it for a December stay (or maybe stays if I can stack with this new credit).

Kumar Anik

I used my credit when I had the same offer back in July. I can confirm that they both stacked. So $800 purchase gave me both credits.

Do I have to prepaid or can I pay at the hotel to trigger both the AMEX credit and the The Hotel Collection credit? The reason why I want to pay at the hotel is I want to have all the resort fee add up to $800 or more. Thanks!

margaret williams

on my platinum card, amex credited a $190 (rental car) and a $10 transaction (hotel) and used them as my $200 credit. neither was booked through amex.

Another Jeff

Multiple single nights even better. Timeline is the issue. Should work based on the terms

Anthony

Would multiple single nights trigger the credit? Could you theoretically check in and out every day to get the $100 property credit each day?

Tim Grable

Will this stack with the MGM, Hilton or Marriott offer?

Paul

Pretty sure it will not, because the charge will come through as FHR travel, not hilton or marriott
