Quick Thoughts
These two new Marriott Amex Offers look similar, but they’re slightly different. If you were to spend exactly $250, your savings would be exactly the same – $50.
However, one offer requires that you spend at least $250 to get $50 back. The other gives 20% back on any amount of spend up to $250 which is a better version of the offer. The reason that’s better is because it doesn’t require that you spend the full $250 in order to get any kind of statement credit.
For example, if you booked an award stay but charged $150 to your room (parking, pet fees, dining, etc.), you’d get $30 back with the Amex Offer giving 20% back, but you wouldn’t get any statement credit with the other Amex Offer as that requires $250 of spend.
Both of these offers are targeted on Amex business cards. If you have an Amex Marriott business card, loading one of these offers to that would mean you’d also earn 6x Bonvoy points on the spend. It’s unlikely that you’ll be targeted for both offers on an account, but if you do then they’ll stack.
Be aware that there’s a third Marriott Amex Offer giving $60 back when spending $300.
With these Amex Offers, buying a gift card from the front desk of a Marriott property (or one of their other participating brands) has worked to trigger the statement credit. A lot of people – myself included – have a hard time finding hotels that have physical gift cards in stock and know how to sell them. If you happen to have a physical gift card already, the hotel can reload that at the front desk too provided they know how in order to use these offers.
Hi,
Is the 20 percent offer a single purchase only? Or is it like the other offer with a maximum cap of $50 but across multiple potential stays.
Thanks
The description and terms don’t state if it’s valid on more than one transactions unfortunately. I suspect it is valid on more than one purchase, but no guarantee.
Thanks. I did chat with Amex and they said multiple transactions are fine. Not sure how correct that information is but at least I have on chat now.
Mixed bag have the 20% off – I even have two FHR stays coming up at Luxury Collection properties (bummed that one is days outside the window).
All past FHR Plat card stays we have paid overages with either an Amex Hilton/Bonvoy cards. As long as its Amex is all that matter after the original pre-payment for the stay.
It says that the offer is limited to hotels in the US, Canada, ect. Has anyone had any luck getting the offer to trigger for booking a European hotel as long as it is booked via the American website? Very disappointed that these offers exclude the rest of the world.
What is the best way to stack the $50 off $250 and the $60 off $300 if those are on different cards?
If your stay costs $550+, you can ask the property to take payment of $300 from one card and $250+ from the other.
Ok thanks, how about this: Is it possible to stack the $200 FHR credit on top of that? Got a Ritz Carlton on my radar.
The FHR credit is for prepaid bookings, so you’d only be able to take advantage of one of these Amex Offers if you used that card for incidentals at check-in and charged enough to your room.
I’m not sure how the Ritz-Carlton card fits in with this though because it’s issued by Chase.
I guess I assumed since R-C is in the Bonvoy family it would qualify for the Amex offer.
I’m afraid not. Marriott has different cards with both Chase and Amex. Only Amex cards get Amex Offers, although Chase has their own type of card-linked program like that called Chase Offers. Most of these offers are targeted, so even if you have Marriott Amex cards, there’s no guarantee you’ll have these Marriott Amex Offers on those cards.
These tend to trigger if you buy gift cards at the front desk, right? Maybe it’s worth mentioning that in the article.
Yep, that should work. I’d mentioned that option when writing about it on GC Galore and thought I’d mentioned it here too – thanks for the heads up that that’s missing from this post.
