Starting Sunday January 14, Staples have another promotion where they’re offering a $20 Visa Prepaid Card when purchasing $300+ in Visa Gift Cards.

Here’s what you need to know:

Staples VGC offer

The Deal

  • Buy $300+ in Visa Gift Cards and get a $20 Visa Prepaid Card via rebate

Key Details

  • In-store purchases only
  • Valid from January 14, 2018 to January 20, 2018
  • Limit 1 rebate per household

Quick Thoughts

As always, these deals are best maximized when using a card that earns 5x / 5% at office supply stores. Now that Paypal Digital Gifts no longer codes as 5x on the Chase Ink Plus card, these VGC deals are a great way to increase your 5% category spend at negative cost.

The largest denomination cards you’ll find in-store at Staples are $200 and they carry a $6.95 fee. Purchase two of these and you’ll come out $6.10 ahead, plus your Ultimate Rewards or cashback depending on which card you pay with.

In theory you could buy a $200 and $100 card which would cost $12.90 in fees – $1 less than purchasing two $200 cards. It’s not worth going that route if paying with an Ink Plus though – you’d be saving $1 but you’d be forgoing 505 Ultimate Rewards.

If you do this deal, don’t forget to submit your rebate. The receipt from your purchase of Visa Gift Cards at Staples will have the details you need. It’s then pretty straightforward submitting your rebate online at Staples Easy Rebates.

It might be worth setting a reminder to check on the rebate a few weeks after submitting it. I’ve always gotten my rebate checks / prepaid cards from Staples, but I’ve sometimes had to follow up with them as they haven’t always tracked or been processed correctly.

You may also be able to combine this promotion with Chase Offers. With my Chase Marriott Visa, there is an offer for 10% back at Staples ($20 max). Although the terms states not applicable with gift cards, this may not be the case (although a different merchant, this is also stated for the Starbucks offer, and I still got the credit when I purchased a gift card.)

I went to my local Staples in Minneapolis this am and they didn’t have this special. It was not published in their flyer and didn’t show up in their computer system. 🙁
