As predicted, the BeFrugal shopping portal is offering 2.25% cashback on the purchase of Business Amex gift cards. They don’t specifically mention an expiration date for the offer, but these increased payouts generally only last one day. Note that the page shows 2.2% cash back, but readers have reported that past deals like these have actually resulted in 2.25% cash back.
If you don’t already have a BeFrugal account, you can find a signup link and many other cool things here.
Notes
- Do not use a promo code to reduce gift card fees or for free shipping since that will invalidate your cash back (the Premium Shipping Plan is fine, though).
- Do not buy denominations higher than $2,000 (see: $2K denomination limit on Amex gift card cash back)

order was declined. amex CSR told that the order was declined since I came thro befrugal even though i told that I have had success with this in the past :-\
That doesn’t make sense. It’s sadly very common for the CSR reps to make up stuff like that rather than admitting that they don’t know.
Does anyone know, can the befrugal account be in my name but I use my wife’s credit card for the purchase? I assume the gift cards can be in anyone’s name.
Does anyone know, can the befrugal account be in my name but I use my wife’s credit card for the purchase? I assume the gift cards can be in anyone’s name.
Yes, you can use your own befrugal account but pay with your wife’s credit card. And, yes, gift cards can be in anyone’s name.
Newbie question. How does BeFrugal credit the cashback?
It starts out in your BeFrugal account as pending, then later (usually 2-3 months) it becomes payable. Then, you can request payment via check, Paypal, or Amazon credit (3% bonus if you select this option)
Amex keeps declining my purchases, but my card issuer (Chase) is authorizing it. Any idea what is going on and how to fix?
That’s very common, but its unclear why it happens. Try using an SSN instead of EIN, or the opposite, if you are buying business gift cards.
Should have said “New Born Newbie”
I’m an infant newbie to this. So buy gift cards, use gift cards to buy debit cards?
Yes, that’s the general idea. Or, use the amex gift cards to pay bills with Plastiq.
I don’t see the $2,000 option – it jumps from 1k to 3k (and I’m logged into my Amex account). Is it just me? The economics of this goes away for me if I have to buy 2 1k cards.
Newbie error – just had to switch card type…
Does Amex no longer offer free next day delivery for 90 days anymore? I have to pay the $8.95 two day shipping fee, right?
Usually that’s offered at checkout. Make sure you are logged into your online Amex account and during checkout see if there’s an option to switch to a free trial of the shipping program
Thank you for your response! There isn’t the option for a free trial. I just deduct $8.95 from the overall profit 😛
Go and add a personalized card and the option will appear. once you sign up for the free trial you can go back and get the one you want.
