The Deal

  • Round trip business class airfare from Washington, DC airports to Athens, Greece as low as $1761 round trip by stacking discounts with British Airways

How to stack it

Using Google Flights, we can narrow down our search by airline (British Airways) and search for round trip fares from WAS (all Washington area airports) to Athens, Greece. A fare of $2158 is available for departures just about every day through the end of the schedule. Note that some dates below show a price of $2126 — those include segments on American Airlines and are not eligible for the discounts we’ll apply to get to $1761.

a screenshot of a calendarSince the $2158 fare is on British Airways, it is possible to stack discounts on top of it (See: Extreme Stacking British Airways, AA, and Iberia flights for a full rundown). In a nutshell, AARP members are eligible for a $200 discount (anyone can join AARP for $12 — see the Extreme Stacking British Airways post for details). By applying that discount, the fare comes down to just under $1958.

If you select flights operated by British Airways (no AA legs), Chase British Airways Visa members have access to a further 10% discount with promotion code CARDOFFERU. In practice, paying with any Chase Visa Signature credit card has historically worked with that promotion code (see the Extreme Stacking British Airways post for more on this as well). After applying 10% off, the total fare comes down to $1,761.84 round trip.

Earning miles

According to ITA Matrix, the long haul flights appear to be in I-class and the flights between London and Athens are in J class. As I-class should earn 250% mileage flown in Alaska Mileage Plan and J-class should earn 350% of mileage flown (assuming no elite status). A round trip from Dulles airport to Athens should earn just shy of 29,000 redeemable miles in Alaska Mileage Plan if you have no status. Alaska elites can earn additional bonuses beyond that for a very nice haul of miles. While Alaska did temporarily devalue a bit this week by blocking last-minute bookings, they back-tracked on that, which means that Mileage Plan remains a good option for crediting these British Airways business class fares.

Alternatively, based on the British Airways flight calculator, these flights should earn 440 tier points and around 18,000 Avios if credited to British Airways, which can certainly help towards status if you’re crediting flights to British Airways. Status with a foreign Oneworld airline can be useful as it can get you access to domestic Admirals Clubs, so some may consider crediting towards BA if they have other qualifying activity planned.

Bottom line

This is a nice fare for round trip travel with outstanding availability. As is always the case with airfares, prices can change at any time. As this fare is so widely available through the end of the schedule, it would even be possible to nest this one for multiple trips or to combine with a award tickets to take two trips to Europe. While British Airways business class may not be the most luxurious in the sky, between a great price and a nice chunk of miles earned, this one looks like a solid deal for those who can take advantage.

Just a FYI, if you use the Visa discount then you cannot Upgrade using Avioa if that’s in your plans….

Bostonbali

Also available from BWI with a BA 787 for the same price (better than the 747 that BA uses on the IAD route)

Add hotel for 1 Day… 2954$ for 2…

LKS

where do you add a hotel to get to this price? I tried it on BA site – price doesn’t change. If I can get the price to $2954 for two I would definitely purchase but I can’t seem to make the discounts work….
