Even though it’s most commonly associated with people age 50 and over, AARP membership is open to anyone and can provide some great discounts.
If you’re interested in becoming a member or will be renewing your existing membership, Walgreens is once again offering a free one year AARP membership when spending $15 on Walgreens-branded health & wellness, beauty or personal care products.

Walgreens seems to offer this deal at least once a year and it represents a great way to save $16 – the standard cost of an AARP membership. In previous years, a form printed out with your receipt that you had to then complete and mail in to get the free membership. Edit: This is confirmed – my mother-in-law bought $15+ of Walgreens branded items the other day and received the AARP form with the receipt.
One of the nice features of this offer is that it’s available to both new and existing members. Also, rather than having a long list of excluded items, the terms have a long list of items that are included. Looking through that list, it seems to include pretty much every type of Walgreens-branded health and wellness product in the store.
My wife and I have been AARP members for the last few years and membership has paid for itself several times over. When staying at the Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview hotel a few years ago, the AARP rate was cheaper than even the Advance Purchase Rate, saving us $100+.
You can also get discounts at Denny’s, Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s and other restaurants, as well as Regal movie tickets and concessions.
AARP even has its own points scheme called Rewards For Good. These points can be used towards various discounted items including third party gift cards, although gift cards are usually only discounted 10% and so it’s not too exciting.
The points can also be used for discounts on local restaurants and attractions, with the coupons being powered by the company that issues Entertainment Books. This can be awesome when you’re only visiting somewhere for a few days as you can take advantage of the discounts you’ll find in an Entertainment Book but without having to buy an entire book.
For example, my wife and I recently saved 50% when tubing on the Chippewa River in Wisconsin by redeeming some of our Rewards For Good points.
It looks like this offer is only available in store rather than online, so no cashback through a portal unfortunately (let me know if that’s not the case in the comments below). If you have a Chase Freedom card though, you can earn 5x Ultimate Rewards this quarter on Walgreens purchases.

I spent $29.98 (pretax, no tax) on OTC Walgreens branded medication. I entered my phone number at checkout to lookup my Walgreens rewards program information. Once I ran my card, the form printed from the coupon printer while the receipt printed from the receipt printer; the cashier handed me both.

What a disaster! I ended up contacting twitter and they made it into a big deal. The form supposedly prints out on the Catalina machine per the store manager phone call today. It’s the little printer that spits out the coupons. Anyway I know from couponing if no green light on Catalina no coupon. Well at my Walgreens the machine is behind the clerk. I asked him if the green light was on! He said it beeps if not working right. Ok. So now manager had to get involved and call me. They have a ticket to repair machine. Meanwhile I’m going to try one of the 8000 other locations that hopefully is in working order…
Did anyone get the AARP form printed on the receipt. I am curious. I dont have any immediate need but looking at buying Walgreens Walzyr for my kids just to stock it up and get this benefit.
I thought of going to Walgreens and giving it a try thinking that it may or may not work (and if it doesnt worst case I can return the items)

SPG used to offer AARP rates which I found to be consistently lower than Advance Purchase rates and sometimes even my Corporate rate (they stopped offering AARP rates in Feb 2018 I believe). Unfortunately, I no longer find any value with having this membership.
Thanks! I was going to pick up some things at a Walgreens or CVS anyway. I’m not too familiar with all the AARP discount options – is there a post about maximizing the value of that membership, perhaps? If not, that would be a great addition to the blog.

Thanks for posting. Last year you had to enroll via an online submission, but it only worked if you were 50+. In that case you had to mail it in if you were too young. I suspect it will be the same this year.
I do NOT recommend entering your own phone number on the form. I just used the phone number Walgreens. You can also opt-out of all mailings via their opt out form. Just search for AARP and Privacy opt-out.
I joined AARP when they had the really good sale on BA to Europe back in 2016. I didn’t renew the next year. Now I get so much junk mail from them it’s not funny. If anything, being inundated like this makes me less likely, not more likely, to join them again.

How does it work? Do you get a code on your receipt? Do you have to use a card?
In previous years, there’d be a form printed out with your receipt which you have to complete and mail in. I’ll update the post to mention this.
I should have read this comment first. I spent $15.48 before tax on Walgreen wellness products but no form was printed out and no coupon, and I didn’t know there is supposed to be one. Now I have to go back to ask them to see if they even know what I am talking about.
I bought 16.99 of Walgreens brand generic Pepcid complete antacid. No form printed out. No link was shown on receipt to register…nothing that I could see. Used balance reward number with AARP card linked in account. Manager rang me up, knew nothing about it, tried to brush me off. My phone was dead to show the website. So I immediately returned the item for refund. I’ve looked all over Walgreens site and AARP site and I can’t see how to get this deal. He told me to call 1-800 Walgreens. Gee thanks. Btw the same size generic Pepcid is 9.99 at Walmart. I need to find a better qualifying product if I can figure out how to complete the deal.
