There is a new targeted Amex Offer out today good for 10,000 Membership Rewards points or $100 back on $500+ in spend at InterContinental Hotels. The cash offer amounts to 20% back, but if you value Membership Rewards at anything greater than 1 cent each, that offer is even better. This could be a nice way to grab a little savings on an upcoming IC stay.
The Deal
- A new targeted Amex Offer is out for InterContinental Hotels: Spend $500+, get either 10,000 Membership Rewards points or $100 back (see your offer for details)
Key Terms
- Only valid for stays at InterCotinental Hotels & Resorts properties in the US
- Excludes Palazzo, The Venetian, and all other IHG brands
- Expires 11/30/18
Quick Thoughts
This is certainly a solid offer if you have an upcoming InterContinental stay and the offer joins a number of other lodging offers in our Current Amex Offers database (see the database for other offers valid at Crowne Plaza, Marriott, Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn, Kimpton, Ritz-Carlton and more). The Membership Rewards points would certainly be my preferred version of the offer. Our Reasonable Redemption Values pegs those points at 1.82 cents each, making the offer worth around $182 based on reasonable redemptions — you could certainly get more value out of it depending on how you use your points.
The terms state that the offer is only valid when booking direct. If you try to book through Amex Travel, it most likely will not trigger this offer, which is unfortunate for those hoping to earn 5x with a Platinum card and/or stack with the Amex Travel prepaid hotel Amex Offer. However, bookings through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts have triggered similar offers for me in the past. I would expect that if you are able to book an InterContinental through FHR, you could likely stack Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits with this offer. As a reminder, Fine Hotels & Resorts is a program open to Amex Platinum cardholders (both personal and business in all the many flavors) and all FHR bookings come with the following benefits:
- Daily breakfast for 2
- Noon check in based on availability
- Gauranteed 4pm late checkout
- Upgrades based on availability
- A “local amenity” that is worth about $100 — often a resort/dining credit, sometimes a spa credit or some other amenity with a similar value
That could make for a great deal. Some properties right now are even offering better credits — over the past few days I’ve noticed some hotels offering up to $200 for the local amenity, though I haven’t specifically looked at InterContinental hotels. YMMV, but if you were able to stack an even more valuable FHR offer, this could work out really well.
Keep in mind that the terms state this is only valid at US properties, so this will not do you any good if you intended to be staying abroad. Further, with the recent claw back emails on the Staples offer, I would advise only counting on triggering this offer one time even if the system lets you sync it to multiple cards. I think you could probably get the Membership Rewards offer and $100 offer once each (say by splitting payment on a $1,000 bill over two cards synced with the offer), but I think it’s just too early in the current clawback environment to know for sure.
As always, we have added these to our Current Amex Offers database shortly.
