Quick Thoughts
This is a solid discount considering the large quantity easily available. If you’re looking to book a very expensive Airbnb, the discount could certainly add up here.
Keep in mind though that Airbnb gift cards can be kind of a pain for several reasons.
For starters, once you load the gift card to your Airbnb account, there is no way to transfer that value to anyone else. If you cancel your trip or a host cancels on you at the last minute, you would have no way to give your gift card to anybody else.
Secondly, if you take advantage of the ability to pay half at booking and pay the balance of your Airbnb later, you can only use gift cards for the first payment — you’ll need a credit card for the second payment.
Third, I believe that if you split payment with others, only one person can use a gift card to pay.
The main concern for me would be what happens if you arrive and the host cancels on arrival day. What are the chances of finding a comparable Airbnb for the same dates and price? I’d much rather have a refund in that situation to be able to change plans accordingly. I don’t think that cancellations are very common, but neither would I want to be a few grand in and turn out to be the rare exception.
On the other hand, if you use Airbnb frequently — perhaps you’re a digital nomad and you’ll use the gift cards eventually rather than only for a specific trip — then I could certainly see the potential appeal here. We do sometimes see Airbnb gift cards go on sale for about this amount, but this could nonetheless be very good for the quantity. This could also be a nice way to knock out an easy chunk of credit card spend if you know you’ll use the gift cards down the road.
H/T: Doctor of Credit
I believe I was able to pay for an airbnb stay with gift card after initial booking recently.
I may be wrong but I’ve always been frustrated by this but was able to make it work earlier this fall.
does this really matter with chase UR pts redemption now?
Different strokes for different folks. I’m not interested in using my Chase points for Airbnb – I’d much rather hang on to them for Hyatt and flights and pay for stuff like Airbnb.
FYI, I believe you can’t use GCs on long term stays either.
