Quick Thoughts
This is a great deal for anyone looking to save 14% on paid Southwest flights (though keep in mind that if you the flight you buy is 100% covered by your gift card, you’ll forgo credit card protections). However, if you pay at least some portion of your ticket with a Chase card that has trip delay / lost luggage protection, you can still get those benefits.
As Tim has pointed out in previous sales, the other downside of buying and using a gift card is not being able to earn 3-5x on the airfare purchase (if you would have alternatively purchased airfare from Southwest without a gift card) since these eGift cards will code as normal Costco purchases. That can be partially offset by using a 2x card like the Costco Visa, the Capital One Venture X or the Capital One Venture Rewards (also remember that you can use Mastercard and Discover on Costco.com purchases).
Overall, this is a really nice deal. Note though that the extra $20 off (which drops the price from $450 to $430) is only valid for up to 2 per member.
We will need to take at least one trip (2 people) on Southwest so saving $70 is an easy decision. I don’t think losing points matters since even at 5X on $500 is only 2500 points and I can use either a Freedom unlimited card to get 750 pts or Venture to get 1000 pts. The extra 1500 pts is only about $15-30, much less than saving $70.
Is it possible to resell these?
