Recent better offer: Expired 3/14/22: 100K after $10K spend in 6 months + $200 credit for vacation rental spend in first year
FM Mini Review: This card offers annual rebates that easily mitigate the fee for those who travel often. Authorized users are free and also get access to perks like Priority Pass, Capital One Lounges, Plaza Premium lounges, and more. The card earns 2 "miles" per dollar on most purchases just like the Capital One Venture Rewards card, which are worth exactly 1 cent each toward travel. This makes the return on most spend similar to a 2% cash back card (though in this case you must redeem your miles to offset travel in order to get 1 cent per mile). One huge advantage over cash back: Capital One allows transfering their "miles" to airline miles & hotel points.
Earning rate: 10X miles on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel ⚬ 5x miles on flights booked via Capital One travel. ⚬ 2X miles everywhere else.

Capital One Venture X Application Tips

Capital One Application Tips

  • Velocity Limit on consumer cards: Existing or previous cardholders are not eligible for the same card if they have received a new cardmember bonus for the same product within the last 48 months.

  • 2 card limit: Conventional wisdom and user experience has been that you can have at most 2 Capital One consumer cards, but according to application terms it may be possible to have up to 5. You may be limited to 2 of their rewards cards. Note that this limit does not apply to Capital One co-branded cards like the Kohl's charge card.

  • Hard inquiries usually get issued through all 3 credit bureaus

To check application status, call (800) 903-9177 or (877) 277-5901
If denied, call reconsideration here: (800) 625-7866

Should you apply?

This is a decent travel rewards credit card with good “everywhere” rewards. Earn 2 Capital One miles per dollar for all spend. Miles are worth 1 cent each when redeemed for travel. Simply use the card to pay for any travel expenses, and then log onto your account and apply miles to offset your statement charges.

Things get more interesting now that Capital One Miles are transferable to airline miles. The ability to earn the equivalent of 2 airline miles everywhere is excellent.

It is worth noting that Capital One is known to pull from all three credit bureaus for new applications, resulting in hard inquiries on all of them. Anecdotally, some have reported being approved with a single report frozen.

Are you eligible?

Capital One allows at most 2 Capital One consumer cards and you must wait six months before applying for another card.

Existing or previous cardholders are not eligible if they have received a new cardmember bonus for a Venture X card within the last 48 months.

However, beyond those rules, Capital One also tends to be less likely to approve those who have opened many credit cards with other issuers. There is no known rule as to how many is too many, but those who regularly open rewards credit cards are likely to have difficulty being approved.

How to apply

You can find the current best welcome bonus offer and application link at the top of this page: Capital One® Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Application status

After you apply, call (800) 903-9177 or (877) 277-5901 to check your application status.

If your application is denied, we recommend calling for reconsideration (800) 625-7866. It’s surprising how often denials can be changed to approvals just by asking, though note that Capital One is unlikely to approve those with many open credit cards.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card Perks

Capital One “Miles”

Capital One calls its rewards currency “miles”, though really it is like other transferable currencies in that it offers the ability to redeem towards travel or to transfer to airline miles as follows:

  • Transfer Points to Partners: Points can be transferred to a number of airline and hotel loyalty programs.  It’s possible to get much better than 1 cent per “mile” value via high value airline or hotel awards.  See Capital One Transfer Partners for details.

  • Receive 10,000 bonus miles each year starting at first cardholder anniversary.

  • Annual $300 Travel Credit: Venture X cardholders get 10,000 bonus miles each year starting at first anniversary.

Here’s the description directly from Capital One: “Rent an eligible vehicle with your credit card and you can be covered for damage due to collision or theft.”
  • Trip Delay Insurance: If you pay for at least a portion of your airfare with a Venture X Card, can get up to $500 if your travel is delayed by six or more hours or forces you into an overnight stay. Cardholder, spouse, and dependent children under 22 years old are covered.

Cell Phone Insurance (applies to authorized users)

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card Redeem Points

Cash Back

Cash back is the poorest use of Capital One “miles”. This is because if you redeem for cash back, whether as a statement credit or via check, you’ll only receive half the value of travel redemptions: just 0.5 cents per “mile”. If you are looking for cash back rewards, there are much better options on the market.

Redeem points for paid travel: 1 cent per “mile”

Capital One "miles" can be redeemed for paid travel at a rate of 1 cent per "mile". Travel purchases can be reimbursed by redeeming miles within 90 days of purchase. Note that Capital One keeps a fairly broad definition of travel, with things like flights, hotels, Airbnb, ride shares, cruises, and more qualifying. There is no minimum redemption if you are covering the charge completely with your "miles". If you are redeeming for a partial credit toward a travel purchase, the minimum is 2,500 miles. Also keep in mind that Capital One allows you to combine miles earned on each of their miles-earning cards as well as transfer to other cardholders with eligible miles-earning cards.

Some customers get “special hotel offers”

Capital One "miles" can be redeemed for gift cards for many popular merchants. Some cardholders with older Capital One miles-earning cards may additionally have the ability "Get Special Hotel Offers". If you happen to have a card with this option, you can redeem 64,250 Capital One "miles" for a $900 gift card with select hotel chains. See this post for more detail.

Transfer points

Capital One miles are transferable to a number of airline and hotel partners. Capital One plans to add more transfers partners on an ongoing basis.

Transfer to another Capital One miles-earning card

Capital One allows you to combine miles earned from all of your Capital One miles-earning credit cards. Additionally, Capital One allows transfers to any other cardholder who has a miles-earning Capital One card. This makes it very easy to combine miles to redeem for a valuable award.

Transfer Partners

Rewards ProgramCapital One Transfer RatioBest Uses
Accor Live Limitless1000 to 500Use to pay hotel bill with value of 2 Euro cents per point. In some cases (such as hotel to airline transfer bonuses) it may make sense to convert Accor points to the following airline miles at a 1 to 1 ratio: Finnair, Iberia, Qantas, or Virgin Australia
Aer Lingus Avios1 to 1 via BAFuel surcharges are sometimes lower when booking with Aer Lingus ( rather than British Airways, Qatar, or Iberia. It's possible to move points (Avios) between Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Qatar.  See also: Avios Sweet Spots for Award Tickets.
AeroMexico ClubPremier1 to 1AeroMexico is a SkyTeam partner. Club Premier points can be used to book flights on AeroMexico, SkyTeam alliance members (such as Delta or Korean Air), or on select partner airlines. Unfortunately many have reported that awards are extremely difficult to book through AeroMexico so we do not recommend transferring points to this program. If you want to fly AeroMexico, look to transfer points to another SkyTeam partner (such as Air France) and then book AeroMexico with that program.
Air Canada Aeroplan1 to 1Redeem for Star Alliance flights and/or flights with Air Canada partners (such as Etihad). No fuel surcharges; $39 CAD award booking fee; 5,000 points to add stopover on one-way award. See: Air Canada Aeroplan: Everything you need to know.
Air France KLM Flying Blue1 to 1Monthly Air France Promo Awards often represent very good value. Air France miles can be used to book Sky Team awards, including Delta awards. Air France often offers very good business class award pricing between the US and Europe & Israel.
Avianca LifeMiles1 to 1Avianca LifeMiles can be great for Star Alliance awards. They offer reasonable award prices and no fuel surcharges on awards. They also offer shorthaul awards within the US (for flying United, for example) for as few as 7,500 miles one-way. Best of all, their mixed-cabin pricing can lead to fantastic first-class award prices. See this post for details.
British Airways Avios1 to 1While flights on British Airways itself often incur outrageously high fuel surcharges, many BA partners charge low or no fuel surcharges. Excellent value can be had in redeeming BA points for short distance flights. It's possible to move points (Avios) between Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Qatar. See also: Avios Sweet Spots for Award Tickets.
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles1 to 1Cathay Pacific has a decent distance based award chart, but they no longer allow stopovers longer than 24 hours. Cathay Pacific Asia Miles can be a good option for booking American Airlines flights with a distance based award chart, especially if other OneWorld Alliance miles aren't available. For long distance flights, it is possible to reduce the cost of a premium cabin award by adding on a lower cabin segment. See this post for details.
Choice1 to 1Choice Privileges points seem to be randomly valuable within the US, but dependably valuable internationally in expensive locations such as Scandinavia and Japan. Points can sometimes offer great value when used towards participating Preferred Hotels of the World.
Emirates Skywards1 to 1The best use of Emirates miles has been to fly Emirates itself. Unfortunately fuel surcharges can be steep. See: Emirates Sweet Spot Awards - First class from 30K miles round trip.
Etihad Guest1 to 1Etihad offers a distance based award chart for flying Etihad and another for its partners. Points may offer good value for expensive but short-distance flights.
EVA Air Infinity MileageLands1000 to 750If you want to fly one of the best business class products in the sky, the best way to snag EVA flights is with their own miles since they release more award space to their own members. One-way business class flights from the US to Taipei cost 75K to 80K miles. Fuel surcharges are very low on these routes.
Finnair Plus+1 to 1Award prices are quite high compared to competing programs. Interestingly, miles can be exchanged for tier points (towards elite status).
Iberia Avios1 to 1 via BAIberia offers very low award prices on their own flights and a very reasonable 25 Euro cancellation fee. Partner awards can offer good value under some circumstances as well, but these are usually nonrefundable. Fuel surcharges are sometimes lower when booking with Iberia rather than British Airways, Aer Lingus, or Qatar. It's possible to move points (Avios) between Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Qatar. See also: Avios Sweet Spots for Award Tickets.
Qantas Frequent Flyer1 to 1Best use is probably for flights on El Al with no fuel surcharges. Also useful for short AA flights. Qantas offers distance based award charts similar to Cathay Pacific. Both are OneWorld Alliance members. I recommend comparing award prices across both programs before transferring to either. Qantas offers round the world business class awards for only 280,000 points (but with many restrictions)
Qatar Privilege Club Avios1 to 1 via BAQatar has reasonable award prices for flying Qatar itself. Points are now transferable 1 to 1 to British Airways (and from there to Aer Lingus or Iberia)
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer1 to 1Use to book Singapore Airlines First Class awards (generally reserved for their own members), Alaska Airlines economy awards, or for Star Alliance awards (including United Airlines).
TAP Air Portugal1 to 1
Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles1 to 1Miles & Smiles offers a number of awesome sweet-spot awards including 7.5K one-way anywhere within the US, even to Hawaii. Many awards cannot be booked online but can be booked via phone or email. See: Turkish Miles & Smiles Complete Guide and Turkish business class sweet spots from the US.
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club1 to 1Virgin Atlantic offers a few great sweet spot awards including US to Europe on Delta One business class for 50K points one-way. See: Best uses for Virgin Atlantic points (Sweet Spot Spotlight).
Wyndham1 to 1Wyndham often allows booking multi-room suites for the same price as a standard room. It's sometimes possible to get great value from points in that way. Bonus: award nights are not subject to resort fees. Additionally, you can book Vacasa vacation rentals for only 15K points per room per night. Wyndham Earner cards offer automatic 10% discount on award stays.

Other ways to redeem points

Capital One "miles" can be redeemed to reimburse travel purchases or transferred to airline partners. Additionally, they can be redeemed for gift cards or travel booked through the Capital One travel portal.  You'll usually get 1 cent per point value when redeeming for gift cards or travel booked through Capital One, but you'll only get half a cent per point in value when redeeming for cash back as a statement credit or via check.
You can also use points to pay some merchants directly (for example:  Don't do this.  These options offer poor value. Further, they may compromise the security of your account (i.e. if someone hacks into your Amazon account, they might spend your Capital One "miles" - causing you a headache in getting your points reinstated).

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card Manage Points

Combine Points Across Cards

If you have multiple cards that earn Capital One "miles", you can freely combine those miles via your online account. This can be useful when you want to put together the miles for a valuable redemption in a single account.

Share Points Across Cardholders

Capital One allows cardholders to share points with any other customer who has a credit card that earns Capital One miles. There are no annual caps or limitations. To share points with another cardholder, you will need that person's credit card number. Simply call the number on the back of your card to initiate the transfer. Capital One miles transfer to other customers instantly.

How to Keep Points Alive

Thankfully, it is very easy to keep Capital One "miles" alive: simply keep the miles in an open Capital One miles-earning account and they will not expire. Note that if you close a Capital One miles-earning card, you will lose any miles associated with that card. You should either redeem your miles or move them to another card that will remain open as per the sharing section above before canceling.

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card Lifecycle

How to meet minimum spend requirements

Once you are approved for a Capital One card, you have three months to meet the required spend in order to get the signup bonus. If your usual spend isn’t enough, check out this resource to find many more options for increasing credit card spend.

Keep, cancel, or product change?

Is this card worth keeping in the long run? If you are looking for a simple one-card solution that offers a reasonable return on everyday purchases, it might be. With a baseline redemption of 2 cents per dollar spent and the ability to also transfer to airline partners, this card offers just enough flexibility to make it worth considering as a lone card solution. However, keep in mind that there are long-term options on the market to earn 2% cash back with no annual fee and several cards that are even better in the first year. There are alternatively cards that offer bonus categories for more miles per dollar. The Venture card’s strength is in offering a combination that is less common in a single card.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa(R) or Mastercard(R) and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply

Just applied. 812 credit score. Denied. I think this is only the 2nd credit card I’ve ever been rejected for, and it was so long ago for the 1st that I can’t even remember what it was or when. 🙁 I can only guess that it’s the credit card applications from 2022. I’ve always avoided Capital One because of the triple hit to my credit reports. Guess I should have continued that.

Last edited 8 months ago by Cynthia

Love the show Nick and Greg, just applied via your link. Keep up the great work!!!

The Most Hay

I stumbled into a bit of a hack with the travel credit… So I booked a flight & immediately realized I needed to book on Amex plat due to long layover in SLC & only one lounge available.

I cancelled the flight I booked within 15 min, but the trigger to use the travel credit must be immediate because it showed up against the cancelled flight the following day.

After the flight was 100% refunded, the travel credit was also refunded, but I had a balance in my account from costco, and the travel credit wiped out the costco balance..

Seems like a glitch, but there is a round-about way of travel credit being used to offset a non-travel purchase..

Nick Reyes

Yeah, that kind of thing can work for lots of card travel credits. But regarding the Amex Plat, why did you need to book on the Amex Platinum? You don’t need to have booked your flight with that card to get lounge access.

The Most Hay

Yeah – brain fart… I somehow conflated setting Delta as airline for incidental fees, and using that to get my wife into the sky lounge on this trip with actually booking the ticket.. Oh well, had already cleared bonus on venture X and still have a little to go on the plat, so I guess it worked out anyway.

I noticed in trying to use my $300 travel credit that hotel rates are about 20% higher than a direct reservation. You do get 10x in Cap One miles, but still, it’s a bit annoying as you lose any benefits from booking directly through a hotel.

They will price match: “ Flight, hotel, and rental car purchases made through Capital One Travel are eligible for price matches if you find a cheaper itinerary elsewhere and let us know within 24 hours of booking through Capital One Travel”

Dr. McFrugal

Does this work with autoslash too?

The Most Hay

Can you book autoslash through portal? If not, I would think no. That’s the one caveat – they’ll price match, but have to be able to get to a booking in the portal to activate

Why does this have such a lower first year value estimate, compared to the regular venture, when right now they have the same welcome offer and same effective annual fee?

A question on the $200 vacation rental spend:

Are there limitations or can I just book an AirB&B or Vrbo and pay with the card?
Do I have to book through the Cap One travel portal?

Same question from me … anyone know the answer?

You can just book and pay with the card.

applied today using link from best deal site. So hopefully someone at FM got a bonus. New to Capital One.

yep, rejected. 800+ credit score. Maybe didn’t like that I have opened two cards already this year.

I applied when the card was first announced and was rejected. Figured I’d give it another try using your link since the offer is about to be pulled. Dinged again. Oh well, I have opened a lot of cards recently, Amex in particular.

Tho D.

Just applied and got rejected. Credit score 820-850. I am not sure for what reason. Is there a number to call for reconsideration?

Just applied & was approved immediately. Within seconds – thanks!

Summit Hotwani

Just applied using your link, got rejected :/
Credit score : 800 / 803 / 813 (from the 3 crediting reporting bureaus).
Last Credit card application: October 2019.

Any other Capital One cards?

Summit Hotwani

None. This would have been the first.

I got the venture X card. Question is how get & use Hertz President’s Circle status when renting a car as nothing on my capital one account mentions it?

Home>View Rewards>Discover Travel>scroll down to Hertz.

Li Yang

Used your link. Instant approval. Second card from Cap One. Thanks for all the information you guys provided.

With Cap One, does the person referring you have to have the same card for which you are applying? My bro-in-law only has a business card.

Used your link, approved instantly. I’m exactly 5/24, with recent approval on 9/3.

Jan W

Just got approved in five minutes–which is impressively fast since I have a fraud alert after someone filed our 2016 taxes before we did! I applied at 4:18, received alerts within minutes from all three credit bureaus (slight Ugh), Capital One called me at 4:20 to confirm identity, and I received a congratulations email at 4:23. Chase recently declined P2’s CSP app after numerous follow up calls and SMs from him–it took five weeks to even get a clarification of what happened to the application. Five weeks versus five minutes…CapOne FTW!

Thomas Molina

So I completed the bonus for the Venture One this week. I opened the One June 3rd. I’d like to apply for the X now but I’ve read they may not approve a second card if you’ve opened another within six months. Do you think the offer will be pulled before my 6 month window or should I roll the dice and apply now? Thanks for all you’ve done and do.

Nick Reyes

Six months has historically been the rule, but many people have been approved for the Venture X despite having opened another Capital One card within 6 months. It seems they aren’t applying that rule to this card — I think it’s worth a shot now.

I see below you’ve gotten this card. Does the enhanced hotel gift card redemption option still show on your (or your wife’s) account even after getting the Venture X? Don’t want to risk it

Last edited 1 year ago by Benn

How does Cap1 treat this card for those with the Cap1 Venture card? P2 got the Venture card ~6 mo ago and I’m wondering if there’s an opportunity to get this bonus as well…

Nick Reyes

Yes, you can get both. My wife had both a Venture and VentureOne (and a Spark Cash card) and got approved for the Venture X. More on that and other frequently asked questions:

I used your link and got instant approved. Second cap one card! Interesting application questions. I made sure to say I occasionally carry a balance. I couldn’t figure out how to get a referral link but that’s ok. Thank you for all your great work.

Nick Reyes

Congrats! You can get your referral link by logging in to your account, clicking to view your Venture X card (like the page that shows your transactions on the card), clicking “I want to…” and then finding the section that says “refer a friend”. Note that you will only receive referral points if the person you refer does not currently have any Capital One cards. More detail in this post:

Just applied through your link and got approved!

Nick Reyes

I trust they will remove or reduce the cash advance upon request?

Nick Reyes

I don’t know, I’ve never tried.

P2 just applied thru your link – instant approval. Thank you.
status was: 3/24 (now 4/24), had 1 new personal card in last 12 mo and 4 in last 24 mo.

High CL and cash advance. Seemed to remember an old online account for a savings account from 10 years ago – and the login still worked!!

Maybe I will give it a go too …

Nick Reyes

If you give it a go also and you don’t yet have a Capital One credit card, you’ll want to generate a referral link from her account as she’ll get 25,000 miles for referring you. If you already have a Capital One credit card, she unfortunately won’t get referral credit.

Wow !! thanks for that advice. Just reminds me why I love Frequent Miler !!

I was considering the Citi Premier as I don’t need to worry about 5/24 anymore – I have 327 Chase cards now – or so it seems, anyway!

Nick Reyes

I like the Premier and all, but after $10K spend you’ll have 120K miles with access to almost all of the same transfer partners as Citi and a few more. And your P2 will get an extra 25K miles if you qualify for that and use their referral.

Seems a much better deal than the Premier to me. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Premier. And two $395 fees isn’t cheap. But I think it’s worth it.

You are right. I will wait for her card to come, generate the referral and give it a go.

I am at an unusual point right now, having just completed all spending for the bonuses on all recent cards, so why not? After all it’s 6 months to spend the $10K.

OK, I took your advice (couldn’t wait) and applied via P2’s referral code and … instant approval.

Thanks again.

Nick my wife has an old capital one she will be closing. After she closes that card and I refer her will I get the referral bonus or do they have some “memory” of relationship

Nick Reyes

Good question @Stan. I have no idea. Let us know how it works out!

Used your link for P2 wife…approved! 802 CR with 7 new cards in last year!

Larry K

Terms don’t say whether the $300 credit is annual are cardmember based which is kind of significant for first year. Do you guys know the answer?

And… does the $300 benefit transfer to each authorized user, like the lounge benefit?

Nick Reyes

It is cardmember year and no you don’t get multiple $300 credits for each authorized user. That would be wonderful, but CNB was the only bank I recall ever doing that (and it eventually died). Your AU’s spend should trigger the $300 credit though if they book through Capital One Travel….though I’m not sure they can since you have to log in to book and I don’t think their AU card will show up within your login or theirs to pay on Capital One Travel.
