Rakuten is offering increased in-store card-linked payouts at a number of popular retailers, including Walmart, Best Buy, Walgreens, and Office Depot / Office Max. The Office Max / Office Depot offer has a very low cap, but the rest of them could continue to be useful for the next couple of weeks.
The Deal
- Rakuten is offering 5% back / 5x Membership Rewards points in-store at a number of popular retailers through 12/24/21. Examples available for unlimited use include:
- 5x at Best Buy
- 5x at Walmart
- 5x at Walgreens
- 5x at Gamestop
- 5x at Office Max / Office Depot (up to $5 / 500 points per transaction)
If you’re new to Rakuten
At the time of writing, Rakuten is offering a $30 bonus for new customers who sign up and spend $30 or more within the first 90 days. Spending in-store with card-linked offers counts. If you’re new to Rakuten and you’d like to sign up, feel free to use the Frequent Miler referral link with our thanks:
Keep in mind that those who value American Express Membership Rewards points at greater than 1c per point will prefer to change their earning preference to Membership Rewards points.
Key Terms
- Each offer is available for unlimited use through 12/24 (note that the Office Max / Office Depot offer is limited to $5 / 500 points per transaction)
- Offer terms exclude gift cards and online purchases (YMMV)
- Must link the offer to your payment card before use and must re-link after each use if you want to use it again
- See each offer for any specific terms
Quick Thoughts
These payouts will surely be quite popular. Note that terms indicate that gift card purchases are excluded from earning rewards per the terms. I have no idea how strictly that will be enforced, but we did receive a report from a reader who was threatened with closure of his Rakuten account a few years ago for in-store gift card purchases.
I’m not sure whether any of these may stack with other programs, but see Stephen’s post about which programs stack if you’d like to check.
