Over the past day, I’ve seen economy class airfare sales popping up to Australia from a number of US cities — Boston, Charlotte, Atlanta, and more. Today, a new deal came out from San Jose, CA to Melbourne, Australia from just $599 round trip. This one depends on where you book — the cheapest prices are available via SkyScanner, or you could book through major OTAs for $683 RT. This price is widely available from August to November, which includes the Australian spring time.

The Deal

  • Cheap fares from San Jose, California to Melbourne, Australia from $599 round trip on Delta / Virgin Australia

Availability

  • Low prices are available from August to November
  • Search cheap dates with Google Flights, then use SkyScanner for the lowest prices (or Momondo for cheaper-than-Google-Flights prices)

Quick Thoughts

Prices vary a bit from one day to the next, but these cheap fares are widely available from August through November. The $599 example above is August 9th to August 20th. If you’re looking to catch the beginning of summer, here is November 6th to the 15th for $622:

You can use Google Flights to find cheap dates, though note that the calendar is taking a minute to load — you’ll have to click on a departure date and give the computer a chance to run the numbers – it won’t show the low prices in calendar mode before you pick a departure date. though these prices are pretty widely available. You’ll see these flights running from $683 through Google Flights.

Prices fluctuate via Momondo, with some days being a bit more expensive than SkyScanner and sometimes pretty close to Google Flights / Priceline / Expedia / etc at $683.

These are the same August 9-Aug 20th dates as the $599 example above via SkyScanner.

These are some excellent prices for travel down under. While some may say it is a long way to go in economy class if you enjoy the convenience of having a large balance of miles, it’s hard to argue with the value for price here.

J.M. Hoffman traveled to Melbourne in the winter and he got some great pictures. If you need some inspiration to take off, here you go:

Bottom line

These are solid prices for economy class flights from the US. As noted at the top, I’ve seen sales from a number of cities this week – so it might be worth checking for flights from your city even if you’re not based in California. I assume these are also available via the credit card portals if you prefer to pay with points, though I’d expect the $683 pricing you see through major OTAs.
