IHG giving 10% off cash portion of Points + Cash stays

IHG is once again giving a discount on the cash portion of Points + Cash rates. This latest promo gives a 10% discount which, in many cases, still doesn’t make Points + Cash rates worth considering. However, there are at least some properties where this hybrid rate can get you some excellent value.

Quick Thoughts

I tend to ignore Points + Cash bookings with IHG because they generally offer average-to-poor value for your points. For example, this room at the Holiday Inn Express Virginia Beach Oceanfront would cost $149.

A Points + Cash booking on the other hand is available in various different increments, or a full award stay at 29,000 points for the night.  If you were to book a night on a Points + Cash rate using the fewest necessary points, you’d redeem 9,000 points and pay $107 – down from $119. Redeeming those 9,000 points is therefore saving you $42 which means you’d be getting only 0.47 cents per point of value which is less than the Reasonable Redemption Value of IHG points.

However, there are some outliers. For example, a different hotel in Virginia Beach – the Holiday Inn & Suites Virginia Beach (North Beach) – would cost $302 for a 1 king standard room with a sofa bed.

Holiday Inn Virginia Beach North Beach - Cash

Compare that to the Points + Cash rates. Once again, you can book in varying increments, all the way up to a full award stay at 48,000 points. Look at that lowest level though – 8,000 points + $215 (down from $239 courtesy of the 10% discount). Redeeming 8,000 points would save you $87, thereby getting you 1.09 cents per point of value – much better than the normal rate you’d expect to get for your IHG points.

I think that’s more of an outlier though rather than being the norm. However, if you’re planning on making any IHG reservations in the next couple of weeks for stays through mid-May, it’s worth at least checking your Points + Cash options in case you find a similar outlier.
