This is a fantastic welcome offer. 100,000 points alone would be noteworthy, but the offer also includes a 25,000-point companion award fare. This means that you can book an award for two people and get up to 25,000 points off the cost of the second passenger. If you’re confident that you’ll be able to use that companion award fare for full value, then the welcome bonus will be worth 125,000 points to you. We’ve previously found that Alaska Miles (now Atmos points) are worth, on average, 1.5 cents each. That means the welcome offer is worth, on average, $1,875 for those who fully utilize the companion award fare.

Atmos points can be used to book flights on Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines, as well as flights on their many partners. Personally, I’ve received excellent value (far more than 1.5 cents per point) from Alaska miles in the past year by using them for business-class AA flights to/from Europe for as few as 45,000 miles each way, and for short-distance AA flights for as little as 4,500 miles each way.

When booking partner airlines with Atmos points, Alaska Airlines usually charges a booking fee of $12.50 per person, per direction. With this card, that fee is waived. Passengers are still responsible for any applicable taxes and partner-imposed surcharges on award tickets.

My Take

It’s so refreshing to see a premium card that costs under $500 and isn’t loaded with coupons. Instead, the Summit card comes with truly unique perks, such as 3x points on international spend, Global Companion Awards, same-day change fee waivers, signature cocktails in their lounge, and more. Here I’ll give my take on a number of the card’s key benefits:

  • Earn 3x for foreign purchases: This is almost too good to be true for those who spend a significant amount of time outside the U.S. On the other hand, when traveling, I tend to spend most of my money on transportation, lodging, and restaurants. These are all categories where I can earn 3x or more with other cards.
  • Global Companion Awards (GCAs): Get a 25K GCA automatically each year, and a 100K GCA after $60K membership-year spend. These are actually discounts off the award cost for the second passenger on any award booking. For anyone who travels regularly with a companion or books awards for two or more other people, these should be compelling. But there are significant limitations. If you typically book cheaper awards (such as 4,500 one-way AA flights), it will be challenging to utilize the value of a 25K certificate fully. And the 100K GCA will be much tougher. A couple of times in the past few months, I booked awards for my wife and me that cost 45,000 points per person. It would have been a waste to use a 100K GCA on these flights. Maybe I could have booked a round-trip for 90,000 per person. That way I could have gotten 90,000 points of value from a 100K GCA. Regardless, my point is that it won’t necessarily be easy to always get 100K value from a 100K GCA. In my case, I’ll probably value the 25K GCA at full point value, but the 100K one for far less.
  • Points sharing: The ability to share points with friends is a great perk. Yes, Hawaiian Airlines cards already offered this, but I was afraid it would go away once Hawaiian Airlines is folded into the Atmos Rewards program. Fortunately, all you need is this Summit card to keep sharing long-term.
  • Partner award booking fee waiver: I love this. Even though this will only save $12.50 per person, per direction of travel, it will make booking back-up flights and other likely-to-cancel flights with Alaska miles Atmos points easier and cheaper.
  • Same-day Change Fee Waiver: I don’t fly Alaska often enough to care much about this, but it’s definitely a nice-to-have!
  • $50 Instant Travel Delay Credit: This is an excellent perk for frequent Alaska flyers. I wish Delta had this! I don’t wish AA had this, though, because it would drive them out of business.
  • Alaska Lounge Passes (2 per calendar quarter): This is the one perk that I’d be unhappy about if I flew Alaska often enough to care. 2 passes per quarter is hardly sufficient for most frequent flyers. On the other hand, I appreciate that they won’t be flooding the lounges with card owners.
  • Elite earnings: Get 10K status points each year, plus earn 1 status point per $2 spent on the card, with no cap. Both of these are welcome benefits for anyone interested in Atmos elite status. For the record, here are the status points needed for each level of status:
    • Silver: 20K
    • Gold: 40K
    • Platinum: 75K (moving to 80K in 2026)
    • Titanium: 100K (moving to 135K in 2026)

This is obviously a great card for anyone who flies Alaska often. It’s also a great card for anyone who spends a lot outside the United States (thanks to the card earning 3x on foreign spend). Additionally, it’s a good card for anyone interested in spending their way to Alaska elite status.

But what about everyone else? What if the only benefits you’ll use are the card’s Global Companion Awards, Points sharing, and Partner award booking fee waiver? In that case, I think this card’s $395 annual fee is hard to justify. I mean, of course, you should get the card for the welcome bonus, but then you should probably cancel when the second-year annual fee comes due. I don’t think that those few perks are worth enough to justify that $395 fee.

Can you apply and get both the atmos summit and the ascend card and the business card ?
So all three ?

Greg

Question: the travel protections like primary car-rental coverage and travel insurance, are those Atmos Summit card features, or are these benefits because it’s a Visa Infinite?

If the latter, how do these benefits compare to something like the Ritz Carlton credit card?

Given that some of us (or maybe a lot of us) are going to be cancelling our CSRs this would be an interesting comparison. It looks like the rental car coverage is identical to Venture X but not quite as nice as CSR (15 days vs. 31 days coverage for domestic rentals, and no countries excluded for CSR).

king

if the only benefits you’ll use are the card’s Global Companion Awards, Points sharing, and Partner award booking fee waiver

the above are the only use ill have as a AA flyer from DFW. i

Ill just get it for bonus.

Jeff

Any idea if the companion certificates are actually awarded on the anniversary date or if they will follow the Bonvoy/Hyatt models where the certificates are not issued on your anniversary date, but like 4-6 weeks after the anniversary date?

Daniel A

I’ve got the legacy AS Visa Signature card where I automatically get the companion fare annually. It arrives on my anniversary date (before even the annual fee hits). I would think this will be the same.

MJR

In terms of the spend method to earn status (1 status point for every $2) do we know if using the Alaska shopping portal will count toward status points? AA allows this and it is an easy way to get extra loyalty points.

king

yes. 3 shopping portal points earned = 1 status points.

Does anyone have any data points or know how strict the BofA 3/12 rule is these days? I’m at 4/12 and don’t have an “eligible” BofA account currently to bump it to the 7/12 rule. I do have a Customized Cash rewards card (oldest account I have – open for 27 yrs) and the old consumer Alaska card (open for ~4-5 yrs) so maybe those help for a Summit approval? I was thinking about just opening a checking account for a $500 bonus, wait a week or so, and then apply to increase approval odds, but would rather avoid opening another account.

Robert

“I don’t wish AA had this [travel delay credit], though, because it would drive them out of business”

Great comment…!

ssss

I wish that Alaska had a provision for single people who can’t use the companion fare. In the UK, BA offers a 50% off ticket or a free companion fare.

Courtney

Same! I travel with friends but we meet at the destination or en route. The companion ticket is pretty useless to me, which is a shame. Not to mention the whole thing where airlines are charging more for solo flyers.

Ivan

Good point. I’d take 10k points over the companion award any day. As someone who lives abroad I was excited about this card when it was first teased months ago but now I’m underwhelmed. I just don’t see myself being able to easily use the benefits.

Dugroz Reports

I’d love to see more detail on the insurance / protections:

  • CDW primary or secondary?
  • Emergency Evacuation details – do you have to pay for the whole trip with your card? Any part? Just have the card?
  • What does trip delay cover & what triggers it?
Rodrigo

CDW is primary. Took me forever to find it.

Greg

+1, want to see details of these benefits

Luke

Went pending yesterday…. Anyone have any success turning this into an approval simply by waiting or calling recon? Or is all hope lost?!?!

Angie

I’d call. Mine was pending at first and I called right away. The phone agent asked a couple questions for verification and it was approved.

John

Is the auto rental insurance primary or secondary?

John

My dilemma right now is deciding whether to apply for this within 14 days via the email link to get the 5000 extra miles (I’m at 5/24) or wait two months and apply for a Chase Sapphire Reserve card (I already have the Preferred but would downgrade if necessary). Been trying to get under 5/24 for 18 months!

John

Great post as always !
I never fly Alaska and still got the card even though I plan to use it for the cert, the waived partner booking fees and 3x foreign spend
This card is a great combo with bilt in Europe especially
1. Mastercard and visa. I still find Amex a pain to use in Europe especially Greece.

2 3x restaurants ( both ) 2x travel ( bilt) and 3x everything else ( Alaska)

With the Chase reserve doing away with 3x general travel that card is not a viable option to me. I personally am not in Citi’s ecosystem

25k cert and waived partner booking fees make the AF a wash. The rest is gravy and I find Alaska points of great value for AA bookings.

Greg, given your personal preferences, are the rental car protections “good enough?”

Peter

I think Citi Strata & Chase Sapphire are the best cards for car rentals without any country exceptions.
-Primary CDW in the US and overseas (except in
Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland).
-$75,000 limit.
-See the link below for the Visa Infinite guide to benefits (click another link in the bottom of the page).

PeterSFO

Great card, I also like that it’s a $400 card designed mainly for people who fly Alaska rather than a $800 coupon book where everyone can get a little bit of value but it’s impossible to use all the perks on the card.

That being said, so many of these perks are tied to paying with the Summit card where the travel insurance is not as good as the Sapphire Reserve. I probably won’t care for short trips along the West Coast but I’m not forgoing the Sapphire Reserve insurance for a $12.50 award fee waiver if I’m traveling to another country.

A harder decision is the fees need to be paid on the Summit in order to apply the 25k companion cert. Maybe the best solution is to book the outbound leg on my Sapphire and then use the 25k cert + Summit on the flight back.
