Chase is making an edit to The Edit credit

27

When Chase refreshed the Sapphire Reserve card and launched the Sapphire Reserve for Business card a few months back, one of the new benefits that appeared was a $500 The Edit credit.

This comes in the form of an up to $250 credit for The Edit properties for January-June each year and another up to $250 credit for bookings from July-December.

Following what appears to be somewhat lackluster enthusiasm for these Chase cards, I’d bet it is what has led it to make an edit to The Edit which will make the credit easier to get it and not forget it.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Business The Edit

From January 1, 2026, Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve for Business cardholders will have a little more flexibility with regards to how the statement credit is earned. Rather than only being able to earn up to $250 from January-June and up to $250 from July-December, cardholders will be able to earn two sets of up to $250 statement credits at any time in the year.

You can therefore still earn the two credits for one stay in the first half of the year and one in the second half of the year, but also for stays only in the first half of the year or stays in only the second half of the year.

Note that you’re still limited to a maximum of one $250 statement credit per booking, so if you book a $500+ stay at a The Edit property, you’ll still only get $250 back. However, if that $500+ stay happened to consist of four nights, you could book two separate stays of at least two nights each and earn the two $250 credits accordingly.

That’s a very welcome development because it makes it less likely that you’ll encounter breakage on the benefit. Previously, you had to be traveling to a city with The Edit properties at least a couple of times per year at completely different times (unless you managed to time things so that you visited at the very end of June and very beginning of July). Going forward, you’ll be able to just book four consecutive nights as two separate stays at any time of the year.

Note that this change will be coming into force from January 1, 2026, so if you’re currently a Sapphire Reserve or Sapphire Reserve for Business cardholder, you’re not suddenly getting $500 to redeem by the end of 2025.

Any purchases that qualify for the $500 Credit for stays with The Edit will not earn points.” That’s what it says in the * on the Chase Reserve Benefits website. Is that going away? I know other sites have reported you’d get points on the delta between the credit and the actual cost, but that’s not what Chase’s website says.

Let’s take that at face value for the moment. Edit hotels are in the ~$1k a night category. So let’s say you booked your two-night minimum prepaid stay for $2k. You get a $250 credit so $2,000 – $250 = $1750. No points, right? Ok, “great”.

If you instead booked for $2k through Portal w/o Edit $250 credit you get 8x points. That’s 16,000 UR points. Those used to be valued by Chase as 1.5c of cash with the CSR – let’s assume that valuation for a moment – that’s $240.

So, all they are doing here is saying “We’re not going to give you $240 worth of flexible points, instead we’re going to give you a $250 credit.”

Of course, with Points Boost, Chase would now argue the 16k points are really worth $320 because sometimes you can get 2.0c of value. So, based on Chase’s logic, instead of giving you $320 of value, they’re only giving you $250.

The Edit and this $500 Credit are simply sleight of hand. Even worse, the Edit’s offerings are so poor as compared to FHR, no one is going to use this anyway. The only thing of value that they announced today was the separate $250 IHG credit. That may have some value for people.

Chase, the country’s banking leader, has no one but itself to blame for telling its HNWI clients to start looking at other banking products. The CSR was the ultimate HNWI retention tool and now they are just angering their customer base. Heads should roll over this completely bungled roll out.

Here’s further updated language: Get up to $250 in statement credits through December for prepaid bookings made with The Edit. Starting January 1, 2026, enjoy up to $500 in automatic statement credits annually with a maximum of $250 per transaction. Two-night minimum. Purchases that qualify will not earn points.

Nicole

Would the Kimpton hotels (eg Kimpton Seafire )be included in the IHG hotel line credit ?

Alex

Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve ” I suppose Business is missing

Christian

Do Edit bookings allow elite benefits and stay credits?

Slaven

Is it a statement credit or a coupon (like Citi strata elite)?

LarryInNYC

According to another blog, Chase is also adding a third $250 hotel credit that can be used against a different list of hotels (they seem to have an agreement with a number of chains, most notable of which is IHG). No additional benefits, two night minimum, and must book and pre-pay through Chase. They also claim these bookings will be elite-eligible.

Kuloko

This “edit” would not change “what appears to be somewhat lackluster enthusiasm for these Chase cards”. Just dump Chase and forget.

Buzz

I would also like some clarification on how to use The Credit while booking with points. Charge $250 to the room?

LarryInNYC

Doubt that. I believe you need to book (and pre-pay) the hotel stay itself on the Chase Portal. You could use your UR points to pay all except $250 of the booking, but I don’t think you can utilize the credit when using hotel points to book the hotel directly (or any other non-Chase portal method of booking).

Ben

FHR is still far superior due to the 1 night minimum.

Harold

Lol that’s literally changing tomorrow. What then?

Ben

It’s literally not changing tomorrow

Moss

Nothing is changing as per leaks. FHR getting better

UnitedEF

The 2 night min is the problem. Looks like FHR will not be doing that so the edit is still far behind

Harold

Are you sure?

UnitedEF

The latest leak yesterday didn’t mention that change. We will see in a couple of days

zac

This maybe a silly question, but can we stack this 250 credit with using points?

also can we stack the 250 Edit credit and the 250 Hotels credit?

Brands

Yes and yes.

Zac

That’s great news. Still a lot of work, but will help justify a 800 dollar fee

Laku

What is Hotels credit and how is it different from Edit credit

Justin

I’m also confused here. By hotel credit, are you referring to the $300 annual general travel credit?

LarryInNYC

There is an additional new benefit, not mentioned in Stephen’s article. Certain hotel chains (including IHG) will feature an additional $250 credit when booking a 2 night stay through the Chase portal. Don’t know why the commenter is stating that the two benefits are stackable (if you can even find a hotel that’s on both lists) and don’t know whether this second, broader list will suffer from the “mark-up” problem that the Edit has (where you have to pay a higher rate to use the coupon).

Abby

How can the $250 credit be stacked using points? I booked an edit hotel last night, should I have used the cash and points option, cash for the value of the credit and points for the rest?
