Quick Thoughts
Saving up to 20% on your car rental can provide some nice savings, but bear in mind that the car rental protections might not be as good on your Amex card as you might have through other cards in your wallet.
Remember to click through to Alamo from a shopping portal – here are the current rates. Cashback Monitor has several Alamo listings due to the different ways that portals list the car rental company’s name.

Thanks Stephen great post. So when your opinion what is the best credit card to use for car rentals and are there exceptions where you use the rental car companies Insurance rather than depending on your credit card insurance?
We normally use my wife’s Venture X card for car rentals as that’s primary. If we were to pay with an Amex card to take advantage of an Amex Offer, I might be inclined to use one of their Premium Car Rental Protection plans https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/insurance/premium-car-rental-protection/ as that does offer primary coverage.
Thank you, does your team get data points on ease of use. My concern is relying on credit card insurance and having to jump through too many Hoops in order to get it to pay out. I went through an issue with Amex ironically several years ago where I thought I was covered but they required so much information that at the time I didn’t capture that ended up hurting me.
We made a claim using Chase Sapphire Reserve insurance 8 years ago and it was nice and easy. https://frequentmiler.com/my-experience-using-chase-sapphire-reserve-rental-car-insurance/
We also had to make a claim using the Venture X’s insurance a couple of years ago and that was easy enough too. Those are the only claims my wife and I have had to make though, so I can’t attest to what Amex and other issuers are like.
Thank you Stephen, I will focus on those cards. Appreciate it
