Quick Thoughts

As a Star Alliance airline that does not collect carrier-imposed surcharges on award tickets (apart from a $25 partner booking fee), Avianca Lifemiles has long been one of my favorite programs. Still, it isn’t without flaws: the Lifemiles website sometimes doesn’t show awards that should be available, is unnecessarily complicated, and sometimes displays inaccurate taxes & fees until you reach the final checkout page. That last point is a bigger problem than you might expect, since you need at least 40% of the miles for a redemption to advance to that final checkout page. Combine all of that with punitive cancellation fees, and you may wonder why this is a long-favored program for me.

However, the bright side of Lifemiles for the past few years has been the Lifemiles Plus membership, which provides a 10% discount on award redemptions (including partner awards) and free changes and cancellation at the “Basic” level or above ($50 per month).

Combining this transfer bonus with a Lifemiles Plus membership has the potential to yield some excellent deals.

However, it is worth mentioning that a reader reached out over the weekend to flag a potential Lifemiles devaluation. Indeed, at first glance, I am seeing increased prices on several routes I’ve checked. While the increases in cases I have checked haven’t been so large as to negate the ability to get a good deal with this transfer bonus, it is important to note that pricing may have changed. We’ll be taking a wider look at that, and you can expect a post if it is indeed the case that there has been a wider devaluation. In the meantime, be sure to check the award price on your desired route(s) before transferring.
