Generous spending offers for existing Amex cardholders (very targeted)

You’ll sometimes find spending offers on American Express cards in your Amex Offers. Usually these spending offers aren’t particularly generous—think 7,000 bonus points when spending $28,000—but some cardholders are currently being targeted for spending offers that are far more rewarding.

View From The Wing has highlighted one particularly generous offer of 200,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when spending $59,000. That’s a return of almost 3.5X bonus points per dollar in addition to the base earnings and can be earned up to three times. In that instance, the cardholder found the offer on their Business Platinum Card® which earns 5X on Amex Travel, 2X (on up to $2 million of those purchases per year) for each eligible purchase of $5,000 or more and at US construction/hardware stores, US software & cloud system providers, US electronic goods, and US shipping, then 1X everywhere else. If they maxed out that spending offer in 2X categories, they’d earn a total of 954,000 Membership Rewards points.

This type of bonus points offer is more of an outlier as Amex spending offers usually award an incremental 0.25X or 0.5X on spend; nice to have if you’ll be conducting that spend anyway, but not necessarily enough of a bonus to make it worth moving spend to that card specifically to earn those bonus points.

That said, there are many other targeted bonuses out there that are more generous than 0.25X or 0.5X and which require far less spending than $59,000. Thanks to the (completely anonymized) data we receive from CardPointers, we were able to identify many other types of spending offers that earn at least 1X bonus points if spending to the exact threshold. Some examples include the following, but there were even more offers out there:

• Earn 42,000 bonus points when spending $21,000
• Earn 34,500 bonus points when spending $23,000
• Earn 23,500 bonus points when spending $23,500
• Earn 36,000 bonus points when spending $24,000
• Earn 11,000 bonus points when spending $5,500
• Earn 1,000 bonus points when spending $500
• Earn 10,000 bonus points when spending $6,500
• Earn 13,000 bonus points when spending $6,500
• Earn 13,500 bonus points when spending $7,000
• Earn 11,500 bonus points when spending $7,500
• Earn 12,000 bonus points when spending $8,000
• Earn 18,500 bonus points when spending $9,500

It’s therefore worth checking your Membership Rewards-earning cards to see if you’ve received an equally generous offer.
