Update 7/15/20: This offer has been updated since it was announced in February. At the time, flights booked on American Airlines weren’t eligible for earning bonus miles, but they’ve since been added as an eligible airline, as have Ravn Alaska and PenAir.
~
Alaska Airlines announced this week that they are offering a minimum of 10,000 Alaska Mileage Plan miles earned on round trip partner flights (i.e. a minimum of 5K each way) between North America and non-North America locations from March 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. That could be a great deal for deeply discounted fares.
The Deal
- Alaska is offering a minimum of 5,000 miles each way (10K round trip) on partner flights between North America and non-North America locations from 3/1/20 to 12/31/20
- Direct link to this promotion
As a reminder, Alaska’s partner airlines included in this promotion are:
- Aer Lingus
- American Airlines
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Condor
- El Al
- Emirates
- Fiji Airways
- Finnair
- Hainan
- Icelandair
- Japan Airlines
- Korean Air
- LATAM
- PenAir
- Qantas
- Ravn Alaska
- Singapore
Key Terms
- Earn a minimum of 5,000 total miles each way on Aer Lingus, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Condor, EL AL Israel Airlines, Emirates, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Hainan Airlines, Icelandair, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, LATAM Airlines, Qantas and Singapore Airlines flights between North America and a non-North America destination between March 1 and December 31, 2020.
- North America is defined as the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
- Any bonus miles added to reach the 5,000 mile minimum do not count toward elite status qualification. (in other words, this promotion awards bonus redeemable miles, not bonus elite-qualifying miles)
- Please allow four to six weeks for miles to be credited to your Mileage Plan account.
Quick Thoughts
While Alaska Mileage Plan generously offers 1 mile per mile flown on Alaska’s own flights, there are some discounted fares on partners that may not ordinarily earn 100% of mileage flown. With this promotion, you’ll do even better than 100% of mileage flown on itineraries that are less than 5,000 miles each way.
With Alaska partnering with a number of airlines that fly to Europe and the typically very inexpensive flights we see from some US cities to Europe at this time of year, there should be an opportunity to get a fantastic rebate on cheap economy class trips to Europe. If you value Alaska miles at greater than 1c each (many of us do), your net cost on a round trip to Europe could look pretty attractive.
Keep in mind also that while the marketing headlines note a minimum of 10K miles earned round trip, the fine print indicates that it is really a minimum of 5,000 miles each way. That could sweeten the deal even further if you find a really cheap one-way. Those who could nest reservations might be able to put together a nice chunk of Alaska miles pretty cheaply.
Overall, this is a pretty cool promotion. It doesn’t look like there is any registration required, just be sure to use your Alaska Mileage Plan number on your reservation.

Nick,
I’ve already booked 2 RT tickets via Korean Air to Singapore prior to this promo but flight will be during the
promo period.
Will I still receive the bonus miles & if so can you enlighten me on what I have to do on my end please?
Thank you
I believe the answer is yes and no.
I assume that these are revenue fares (tickets you bought with money, not award tickets). If that’s correct, yes I believe you would still be eligible (you’d get 5K if only one direction is during the promo). All you would need to do is make sure you have your Alaska Mileage Plan frequent flyer number attached to the reservation.
However, all that said, depending on which fare class you’ve booked on Korean, I’m not sure there is anything in this for you. Here is Alaska’s page showing earnings on Korean:
https://www.alaskaair.com/content/mileage-plan/how-to-earn-miles/airline-partners/korean-air?lid=mileageplan:airline-partner-overview:KE
It looks like the cheapest economy class fares on Korean earn 50% of mileage flown. I’m not sure where in the US you’re flying from, but I think from anywhere in the continental US you’re looking at earning at least 4,000 miles each way as even the shortest route from the US to Seoul to Singapore is still more than 8,000 miles one way (so earning 50% means you’d earn more than 4,000 miles ordinarily). Instead, you’ll earn 5,000 miles — a bonus of just a few hundred Alaska miles over what you’d ordinarily earn. If you’re in a fare class that earns 100% of mileage flown, you’re not going to get any bonus here since you’ll already earn more than 5,000 Alaska miles each way.
This promo really works out best for those flying between the US and Europe or South America, where distances (and in some cases earnings) are in some cases significantly less.
Thanks Nick,
Yes this a revenue ticket & it’s close to 7k miles 1 way.
I have another question, will these miles be able to be transferred to my skypass on Korean Air or will
they be usable only on Alaskan Airlines?
The ad is a little deceptive, this won’t work on American airlines… thank you for not listing them
Do award fights count for this bonus? I’m flying Houston to Jeddah next month through dubai on emirates F. But it’s an Alaskan award ticket. Should I expect the bonus?
No. You don’t earn miles on award tickets.
