American Express has joined the transfer bonus party today by launching a new promotion giving a 20% bonus when transferring Membership Rewards to Aeromexico. That takes the transfer ratio to almost 1:2, but despite that headline rate it’s not as great of a deal as it might initially appear.
The Deal
- Get a 20% bonus when transferring American Express Membership Rewards to Aeromexico.
Key Terms
- Expires May 31, 2024.
Quick Thoughts
Membership Rewards normally transfer to Aeromexico on a 1:1.6 basis, so the transfer bonus boosts that ratio to 1:1.92. While an almost 1:2 transfer ratio sounds amazing, it’s not as good as it sounds. That’s because Aeromexico’s award chart isn’t very competitive for the most part, so a 1:1.92 transfer ratio still likely won’t provide tremendous value when booking with Aeromexico Rewards Points.
That said, a couple of years ago Nick discovered that Aeromexico had access to expanded Delta award availability, so this transfer bonus might mean that some better deals could be had than booking with Delta SkyMiles.
Just transferred 75k points and did a booking for 4 tix in Clase Premier (business) for 144,000 AM points and $377 total from LAX-GDL for Thanksgiving week (11/22). Despite AM tacking on that $45 fuel charge per tix, still got about 2.5 CPP on this one. Very pleased with this redemption. A one way in economy on the same date with VivaAerobus or Volaris would have been between $280 and $300 per passenger. Delta was offering the same flight for the 4 tix for 124k miles or 124k points and $180 less.
First booking with AM made! Estimate 2.5 CPP. CPP range up to ~3 depending on ticket type possible.
Equivalent value if you could use to buy a ticket on cheaper VivaAerobus – less then 2 cents.
But Viva has tight seat pitch…so you’d want to pay for an exit row. But still under 2 cents equivalent.
just made my first xfr to AM – earlier before I read this. Instant! I think it’s good for some domestic MX flights. Maybe more sweet spots…tbd.
