Amex is offering a 20% transfer bonus from Membership Rewards to Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles through January 21, 2023. There’s not much aloha in Hawaiian’s award pricing, but the bonus does mean you can get lie-flat business from the mainland for 33,333 MR each way or economy from 16,667 MR each way.
The Deal
- Get a 20% bonus on all transfers from American Expres Membership Rewards to Hawaian Airlines’ HawaiianMiles program through 1/21/23
Key Terms
- Every time you transfer Membership Rewards into a U.S. airline frequent flyer program, your Linked Card account will be charged an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point (with maximum fee of $99). American Express charges this fee to offset the federal excise tax we must pay when you transfer points. We may offer you the option to use points to pay this fee. You will be able to review these details before completing the transfer.
- Transfers are instant, as is the transfer bonus
- Bonus expires 1/21/23
Quick Thoughts
This Amex bonus seems to come up about once/year, last year it was also 0%. Hawaiian’s award chart leaves much to be desired, but it can be a decent choice for awards to Hawai’i on Hawaiian metal when flying from the East Coast (when lie-flat becomes especially valuable). The transfer bonus makes the cost palatable, especially with the swimming pool-sized stashes of Amex points that some folks have.
That said, it can be extremely difficult to actually find business-class rewards from the East Coast, so only transfer if you have a specific, available, award in mind. Speculative transfers to HawaiianMiles should be avoided.
Wow. I haven’t flown Hawaiian in years, though it used to be a favorite of mine. I have 9000 miles in my account that I’ve been carefully keeping alive all those years. After looking at the cost of business class awards for MANY dates from SEA-OGG and SEA-HNL this morning, I’m no longer going to bother with holding on to those miles. 160,000 miles? In low season for Tuesday to Tuesday flights? When the cash fare is less than $2000 r/t? Are they insane? The lowest Business award I found was 100,000 miles. Their awards were always high-priced, but this is nuts.
The only interesting Hawaiian redemption I am eyeing is HNL-RAR (Cook Islands) for 55K round trip in economy. Xfr bonus would drop that to 46K. Flight retails for $900 so actually good value from their award chart (for once).
I also have 10% bonus on SQ in my account, I am not sure if this is targeted.
Where are you seeing lie-flat seats from the East coast to Hawaii for 33,333? I’ve been checking Hawaiian flights for April/May flights from Orlando to Honolulu and from New York to Honolulu and all of the lie-flat seats are 130,000+.
Hi Terry, you won’t find them for 33,333 Hawaiian Miles. Saver award space on Hawaiian (as I’m sure you know) starts at 40,000, so with the transfer bonus it would be 33,333 membership rewards. Agreed, it’s very rare to find saver space from the East Coast, so I don’t advise anyone to transfer anything unless they find it and the date works for them.
