November kicked off with both Chase and Capital One each having a couple of transfer bonuses available to travel partners. It was a little unusual that American Express didn’t offer any transfer bonuses but that’s now changed as they’ve launched a couple of new ones today to Avianca LifeMiles and Air France/KLM Flying Blue.
The Deals
- American Express is offering bonuses when transferring Membership Rewards to the following airline partner programs:
- 15% to Avianca LifeMiles
- 25% to Air France/KLM Flying Blue
Key Terms
- Both transfer bonuses expire December 7, 2022.
- Avianca LifeMiles
- The bonus miles and the transferred miles may be accrued in separate transactions.
- LifeMiles earned by transferring and the bonus Miles earned with this promotion do not apply to obtain or maintain the LifeMiles Elite Status.
- Transferred LifeMiles as well as the bonus miles will be accrued no later than 24 hours after the LifeMiles Partner reports the request of miles transfer.
Quick Thoughts
New transfer bonuses are always welcome and there’s no exception here, especially seeing as no other programs are offering transfer bonuses to LifeMiles and Flying Blue right now.
Avianca sent out an email today regarding this transfer bonus which lists an end date of December 7, so at least we know how long we have in order to take advantage of that offer.
The Flying Blue transfer bonus is different though. There’s no end date listed on the American Express website, so we don’t know if it’ll be ending at the end of November, if it’ll be extended beyond that or if it’ll end even sooner than November 30. In the past when Amex has run transfer bonuses without an end date being listed, those transfer bonuses have often been targeted. That doesn’t necessarily seem to be the case this time, but be sure to verify that your Membership Rewards account displays the 25% bonus before transferring to Air France/KLM. Update: Daniel has confirmed in the comments below that the expiry date is December 7 as well.
With Air France/KLM, this can give you a nice discount on the number of miles you need to transfer if you’re interested in this month’s Flying Blue Promo Rewards, as well as for these Flying Blue sweet spots.
The 15% transfer bonus to LifeMiles can also be useful if you’d like to make use of these LifeMiles sweet spots.
I’m new to the AMEX ecosystem so have never transferred any MR points. It says can take up to 48-72 hours to transfer to KLM flying blue. Is it usually instant when transfering to them or is there an actual wait? Is it any differnt when there’s a transfer bonus and does the bonus show up at the same time as the miles do or at a later date?
I think it’s usually instantaneous—it was for me today. The total amount of miles (including bonus) appeared in my Flying Blue account seconds after I made the transfer from Amex.
My existing 100k Flying Blue points are expiring on 12/31/22. Any options to extend without actual flying AF or partner cash fares?
Easiest transfer Amex 1,000 points minimum OR take out BOA Flying Blue CC. One transaction resets 18 month clock.
My account lists an expiration date of December 7 for Flying Blue transfers.
Thanks! I’ll update the post.
