Flights to Australia are on sale on Qantas from a number of US cities, with round trip economy class flights available from the $600’s out of Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Charlotte, and likely more cities through smaller online travel agencies (or the $700’s from most major OTAs).

The Deal

  • Cheap flights to Australia from several US cities, including from $639 round trip (nonstop out of Dallas for that price), with quite a few cities possible (mostly on Qantas, but there are also good prices on United and Virgin Australia in some cases)

Key Details

  • Cheapest prices are available via small online travel agencies listed at Skyscanner or Momondo

Quick Thoughts and examples

While Australia is surely a long way to go in economy class if you’re accustomed to redeeming your points and miles in business or first class, the price here is excellent for those who would otherwise consider taking this journey. The fact that these prices are available during peak US summer travel season is a nice bonus for those whose travel is confined by school holidays.

As an example, here is a look at June dates from Google Flights out of Dallas.

While you can book directly through Qantas on the nonstop for $734 RT, you can save a bit by booking through Expedia for just $690.

However, it gets even cheaper if you go through an online travel agency at Skyscanner, where you can book as low as $639 round trip.

It’s not just Dallas on sale. Here is a peak at Google Flights during July and August dates out of Charlotte. Note that these prices are not showing up until I select a departure date (the initial calendar view shows prices from about $1500 RT).

Once again you can save a bit more by plugging those dates into Skyscanner and booking through one of the smaller online travel agencies listed there. For example, July 31st to August 7th above showed up at $751 through Google flights (available directly through Qantas), but you can find those same dates for $664 round trip on Skyscanner.

Star Alliance flyers have some options as well. For example, here’s a look at Philadelphia to Sydney in August, with the cheapest flights available on United.

In this case, Skyscanner does not return those results. However, some agencies at Momondo list those flights from $686 round trip.

Overall, these are excellent deals for travel down under during dates that are typically in high demand for US travelers. Keep in mind that this will be winter in Australia, but the weather is still quite comfortable in most of the country.

The airline will only pay me $600 to fly economy to Australia?

No way. I charge a sliding scale that starts at $500 per hour and peaks with my anxiety at $5000 per hour in the final 4 hours

anon

yeah but to get the true value you have to book a 3 day coast to coast Greyhound bus ticket with a seat next to the bathroom for $1 before you jump on your bargain flight…..I wish everytime they get excited over a crap fare in economy they would post what it cost to fly upfront.
