Bank of America adds referral bonuses for some customers (targeted)

0

At long last, Bank of America seems to be adding the ability to earn referral bonuses to many of its non-cobranded cards. According to multiple Reddit users, the links are showing up in the app, not the desktop site, and only for some users:

Referrals are $100 each and limited to 5 per person per calendar year.

The Deal

  • Bank of America is now giving some cardholders the opportunity to earn referral bonuses for some BoA credit cards
    • Limit of 5 referrals per calendar year
    • Limit of $500 in referral bonuses per calendar year
    • Referral bonus will be received 60 days after approval
  • Referrals appear to be limited to the following cards:
    • BankAmericard
    • Customized Cash Rewards
    • Premium Rewards
    • Travel Rewards
    • Unlimited Cash Rewards
  • As of this point, referral links have the current public offer

Quick Thoughts

Although neither my wife nor I appears to be targeted, this is great news. Bank of America, as far as I know, has never offered referral bonuses for any of its cards. The Atmos cards do allow you to earn points from referrals, but only through a ridiculous process that seems to originate through Alaska and doesn’t always work.

These new referral bonuses are for BoA’s own cards and are limited to the personal variants only. $100 per approval isn’t astounding when compared to other issuers, but it’s a heckuva lot better than the $0 that Bank of America has traditionally offered.

I checked in the app for both my wife and me, but couldn’t see anything, so I asked the BoA chatbot about referrals. It offered to take me directly to the Refer-a-Friend page (which has never existed before). Upon arrival, here’s what I found:

Those who are targeted see cards to choose from underneath the “Start sharing” heading at the bottom, instead of the “Not seeing anything?” message that I have.

While I would love to be targeted for these bonuses, the fact that they exist, have a devoted page, and are popping up after the recent “Bank of America Rewards” revamp makes me encouraged that we’ll see more of this from BoA in the future.
