An email came through from Thrifty Traveler Premium alerting me to a nice deal for Delta SkyMiles enthusiasts: New York or Fort Lauderdale to Bogotá, Colombia for just 10K SkyMiles + $85 round trip for dates from September 2021 to March 2022. Other cities are also on sale for 10K-20K miles round trip. Perhaps even better yet is that you can choose Main Cabin instead of basic economy for just 2K more miles round trip (12K from New York as per the example in this post). That’s pretty solid value for SkyMiles.
The Deal
- Delta is offering round trip flights to Bogotá, Colombia from just 10,000 SkyMiles round trip from New York and Fort Lauderdale (with deals from other cities ranging between 10K-20K round trip).

Quick Thoughts
As seen above, these cheap round trips are pretty widely available during some stretches of dates between fall 2019 and early spring 2022. I compared my sample dates (January 12-19, 2022) to cash rates and saw that the same Delta flights started at $255 round trip. After you account for the $85 that you’ll pay in taxes, you’re getting $170 worth of Delta airfare for 10K SkyMiles round trip. However, the deal gets a bit sweeter if you’re booking main cabin.
As you can see above, the main cabin fare, which includes seat selection, free changes, and 1st checked bag, is $305. If that’s what you would have paid to book, you’re getting $220 in Delta airfare for 12K miles, which is like 1.833c per mile. That’s a pretty good deal for SkyMiles.
The deals may not be quite as strong from other cities and can vary based on date, but it’s worth checking your local deals against cash rates as Delta often has deals from many points or origin during flash sales like this.

Are you aware that there is severe violence happening in Colombia right now? The State Dept raised Colombia to Level 4.
No, I wasn’t — but this deal runs through March of 2022 and Delta has no redeposit fee, so if you book a trip for 6 or 9 months from now and the situation is unsafe when your trip rolls around, you can easily cancel.

You are an idiot making a connection in those things. And that has a tinge of racism to it.
We have family in Bogota we’d like to visit. But the vaccination rates are still pretty bad and the political situation is pretty iffy at the moment. Hard pass.
All the more reason to book main cabin for 2K miles more round trip. No fee to redeposit if you want to cancel. Very hard to predict the vaccination rates in February or March 8 or 10 months in advance. No risk in booking and cancelling if you decide not to visit.

Not sure where you’re seeing that. Delta eliminated change and cancellation fees for main cabin fares on itineraries originating in the US last year.
