Hilton is offering a sale on points that won’t make sense for buying speculatively, but I’m actually buying some points this time around because I was making a reservation last night where I’ll be able to get great value for them.
The Deal
- Buy Hilton Honors points with a 100% bonus (0.5cpp) in the following quantities:
- 80,000 total points (40K + 40K) = $400
- 160,000 total points (80K + 80K) = $800
- Direct link to log in and purchase points (our affiliate link) — or go to Points.com through a shopping portal and save a little more. TopCashBack is offering 2.5% cash back here.
Key Terms
- All purchases must be made through the Purchase page on HiltonHonors.com.
- The 100% Points bonus promotion on 3,500 packages of 40,000 points is available for purchases made between September 12, 2018, at 12:01am ET and September 20, 2018, at 11:59pm ET or when all 3,500 packages sell out – whichever is first.
- Members may purchase a maximum of 2 (two) 40,000 Points packages during this promotion outside the 80,000 maximum points purchase limit per calendar year.
- All purchases are non-refundable.
- Points will be posted to the recipients Hilton Honors account within 24 hours of the completed transaction.
- See promotion page for full details
Quick Thoughts
Our Reasonable Redemption Value for Hilton points is 0.45 cents each, meaning that you can reasonably expect to get that much value out of them. Though it is possible to get more value out of them with strategic redemption, it wouldn’t be wise to buy points unless you know what you intend to do with them.
In my case, I was making a reservation last night for two rooms (one for me and one for a family member) in a large city for a big event. My family member was prepared to pay a cash rate, but I instead booked on points. As you can see below, cash rates for standard rooms were $329 or $339 — with tax they came to just under $400 per night — or just 40,000 Hilton points.
In other words, the cash rate would have been nearly $800. Paying $400 for the points instead sounded like a much better deal to them.
If you have a redemption like that in mind, this sale might make sense. Note that the sale is on until September 20th or when 3500 packages sell out, whichever happens first. Hilton points come around for this price often enough that you don’t need to rush and buy unless you have a good use in mind.

[…] Buy Hilton points for 0.5c each (Expires 9/20/18) […]
Are there Hilton properties in Honolulu that would make these a good value?
Do the Hilton points and bonus post immediately?
How is this a deal?
Am I missing something or this an example of what NOT to do?
Not only you paying for points the same amount as you would for the room itself, but you are missing out on earning of 50 or so points per dollar or 40k points on your stay. Therefore, ultimately paying 1.5 times for room.
Option 1:
Buy Hilton Honors points with a 100% bonus (0.5cpp) in the following quantities:
80,000 total points (40K + 40K) = $400
So 2 rooms for $400
Or
Option 2:
$329 with tax= just under $400 per night per room
so 2 rooms for almost $800
If you count the 40k points on the stay, the cost will be $800-$180=$620
I think Nick picked the better option, which is option 1.
Alex shows the math accurately below based on the way I framed it in the post.
Actually, I only bought points for the second room, but the reservation is for 2 nights. The total cash rate for two nights was about $800 with tax (actually $788 and change).
Instead, I bought enough points to cover the room for two nights (80K total points) for $400.
This particular property is a Home2 Suites, which only earns 5 base points per dollar. The current promotion would therefore get me 10 total base points per dollar. Diamond status would get me another 5 points per dollar (100% bonus on the base points before the promo). That’s a total of 15 points per dollar from Hilton. Add 14 from paying with the Aspire and I could have earned 29 points per dollar on the room rate (before taxes).
The flexible rate of the King rooms (which is what I booked) was $339 per night, $678 for two nights before tax. That means I could have earned 19,662 points if I paid the cash rate. Based on our RRVs, that’s aboutn $88 worth of points that I could have earned.
Total with tax would have actually been $788 and I’d have earned ~$88 worth of points. Instead, I paid $400. Seems like a better deal to me, no?
I could have alternatively used two or three credit cards loaded with Amex Offers to split tender and earn some points / statement credits, but it still wouldn’t beat $400 (and would sacrifice the 14x from using the Aspire to pay the whole bill).
Best value is booking with points in areas with HIGH taxes and fees. Those are zero, boosting your value well beyond 1/2 cent
