Lately, it seems that Chase has been trying to copy the types of offers we more commonly see from Amex. Today, I received the following email for a $150 off if I spend $750 or more at INTERMIX with my Chase Ritz-Carlton Rewards Visa card:
The coupon code appears to be a unique, single-use coupon code, meaning that this offer is targeted — though perhaps it has been targeted to all Chase Ritz-Carlton holders?
Can you stack it?
Interestingly, Chase is choosing to offer this as a coupon code rather than a statement credit-style incentive. I’m not sure what the angle is here other than to try out a different kind of offer. As this is a coupon, I wondered if it really required the use of the Ritz-Carlton credit card. INTERMIX frequently comes up in Amex Offers (most recently for $75 back on $250, since expired) and is one of the many stores where you can earn an extra 1X by registering your Membership Rewards earning card (See: More Amex 2X Merchants). While there isn’t a dollar-back offer on Intermix at the moment, I was curious if it would let me pay with an Amex card. I loaded my cart with a bit over $750 in merchandise and applied the code successfully.
And then I moved forward to the steps of interesting shipping and billing information. After entering my credit card number, it took me to the final checkout screen, where you’ll see the promo code was applied and I had loaded an Amex card as my payment method:
I can’t say definitively that it works as I don’t really need anything for $600+ from Intermix (so I didn’t place the order), but it certainly looks like the requirement to use a Chase Ritz-Carlton credit card is not enforced with the coupon code.
Bottom line
This particular deal doesn’t look very good unless you really want something from INTERMIX and can’t find it for less elsewhere. However, I found it interesting to note for future reference that we should be on the lookout for similar offers as Chase appears to be testing the waters (perhaps to see which offers drive the behaviors they want to see). We have seen statement credit offers in recent months for digital wallets on the Ritz, Marriott, and Freedom cards (See: Chase mobile wallet promotions: get a statement credit with grocery store purchases) and on the Hyatt Credit Card for a purchase at Whole Foods (See: $20 back on $50 at Whole Foods. We’ve also seen an offer for 10X points on Sapphire and Freedom cards at Walmart.com via Chase Pay (See: Not targeted: 10X at Walmart.com with Freedom and Sapphire cards). I don’t recall a coupon code offer yet. It will be interesting to see what comes up next. In the meantime, keep your eye out for any other similar promotions from Chase. If you receive another offer, please let us know in the comments!
