Quick Thoughts
Marriott Bonvoy is the only points program that transfers to American Airlines, making AA credit cards the primary way to quickly accumulate a large stash of miles. The good news is that, for now, both Barclays and Citi issue American Airlines credit cards. That means there are several possible bonuses to collect.
When looking at this offer, keep in mind that the Barclays-issued Aviator Red card currently gives 60,000 miles after one purchase and paying the annual fee, while the Citi business card requires $5,000 in purchases within the first 5 months. That might make the Barclays card more appealing for many folks, but if you already signed up for that and/or need a business card to stay under 5/24, this could be a worthwhile option.
Citi Application Tips
- 48 Month Rule: With most Citi cards, you can only receive a welcome offer every 48 months. This applies to the same exact card, not families of cards and is counted from the date that you receive the welcome offer, not from when you're approved.
- Velocity Limits: Citi allows a maximum of one personal card per 8 days and a maximum of two personal cards per 65 days. Business cards are limited to one per 90 days.
- Card Limits: Citi doesn't have a strict limit on the amount of cards that you can have, but it does place limits on the total amount of credit that they will issue you across all cards. Unfortunately, unlike most banks, Citi does not allow you to move credit from one existing card to the another card.
- Application Status: Call (866) 606-2787 or go here to check your application status. For Costco cards, call (877) 343-4118.
- Reconsideration: If denied, call (800) 695-5171 for personal cards or (866) 541-7657 for business cards.
I applied for this card 2 weeks ago. I called Citi asking to get moved to the new offer. My card hasn’t even been activated yet. No luck. Is this a HUCA situation or am I stuck?
I have a Citi Business AAdvantage Platinum Select from 2022. It looks like this link/offer is for a Citi Business AAdvantage World Elite.
Is this a different product from what was around in 2022 and therefore not limited by the 48 month rule, or would the 48 months rule apply?
Read the terms: American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have received a new account bonus for a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® or Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ Mastercard® account in the past 48 months.”
Just noticing a quick misprint, Bilt no longer transfers to AA :-/
Whoops, thanks. Fixed.
Do we know when this offer will go away? I have a few more SUB’s I need to hit the min spend on first.
We don’t unfortunately.
Does Citi do referral bonuses?
If using Alaska mikes for a cheap AA flight to MIA would we get the bags added no charge?
Not sure how the card perk works of upto 4 bags free on a partner award but on AA metal
Great question. I was wondering the same thing on a recent flight I booked with BA Avios but is on AA metal.
There’s two ways I believe you can manage that. First is making the reservation using your saved profile on Alaska but then contacting AA CS and asking them to add the reservation to your account. I’ve done this several times when making resey with BA. The other way is to act like you’re making the reservation on AA for someone not saved in your account and just entering your own info but adding your AA number in the frequent flier section.
Plan 2 just making a “dopleganger” reservation makes sense (saves a call, being on hold) by default using Alaska miles on partner metal your ALASKA flyer number is used (locked in) would’ve been great if you could just add your AA number at the time of booking
There is no Barclay’s AA business credit card for a while
This post is about the Citi AA Business card. The Barclays card mentioned as an alternative is a personal card.
It was edited after my comment… you know that..
This post has been republished (and edited) several times. I have no idea what you saw when you made your comment, just letting you know that the Barclays card that’s listed in the post currently is a personal card, not a business card.
It was saying that citi and Barclay’s both offer AA busniess and personal credits. So I posted my comment that Barclay’s only offers personal. That’s all.
Any data points on retention bonuses for this card?
Given the Citi-AA talks, one has to wonder whether the Barclays business card will become available again.
How do I know if I had this card or received the bonus in last 48 months? I didn’t want to waste inquiry. just calledl citi credit card number and asked if I received a bonus on this one? I called citi card number and asked this and they told me without providing card numbers they can’t say anything.
You may need to go to a physical branch and pull all your old records in the past 4 years.
This is why it’s good to keep an Excel document of all cards you’ve had, date opened, date closed, etc.
Or travel freely app no charge for keeping the records for notes, decent app and info too
I applied for the Citi AAdvantage Personal on April 1, can I apply for Citi AAdvantage Business now or do I need to wait 60-90 days?
in the same boat, according to this “With most Citi cards, you can only receive a welcome offer every 48 months. This applies to the same exact card, not families of cards.”, we should be fine as one is personal card and this is the business card, right?
If I received my last bonus for this card on April 7, 2020, would I need to wait until May 1, 2024 to apply and be eligible for another bonus? Is that something I could confirm with someone at Citi?
Yes. I would also double check the signup bonus post date (not the account opening date).
April 7 was the SUB deposit date on my AA account. The card was opened in February 2020. Ty!
Probably should revise the first quick thoughts sentence about how Bilt Rewards transfer to American
That’s still correct. It doesn’t end until sometime in June.
will Citi tell you if received a bonus in past 48 months on a closed account withOUT actually applying for new card?
Doesn’t hurt to try calling, but definitely not while applying online. Got caught on the Citi Premier when they changed it to 48 months too. Realized I didn’t get the bonus until I called; I was 12 months too soon.
Tim, if I have two different businesses (both sole props, using my SSN), can I get the SUB for a 2nd card after < 4 years on the first?
ime, no.
