Delta is offering a flash sale on flights to London from various cities in the US with prices starting from just 48,000 miles round trip (in economy class). With airfare sales to Europe pretty common, this may not look terribly compelling for those in cities with a heavy low-cost-carrier presence. However, this price is available from some smaller cities, which might be appealing to those in less competitive markets.

Quick Examples

This one is available from a variety of cities, so the trick is just to do a search. However, as a couple of quick examples of availability this morning, I see 48K available nearly every day. This is a 5-week window for a 7-day trip out of New York in March:

As you can see, you’d pay 48,000 miles plus about $184 in taxes and fees. That’s not too exciting out of New York as there are regular airfare sales in the $300’s and $400’s from New York to Europe (including taxes). However, for those in more expensive markets, this could be a decent enough deal. For example, I see similarly wide availability out of Myrtle Beach:

While it’s still not an amazing deal (cash fares can be had in the $500’s right now), it’s worth a look if you’re considering a booking and are flush with Delta miles.

Bottom line

With competition keeping economy class airfares pretty low between most of the US and Europe, this sale isn’t the best deal ever. However, 48K miles round trip is a decent option compared to many other award tickets. Note that in my first few searches I did not see similar pricing on one-way tickets (those priced out at 30K each way still). Also note that you can fly on Delta or partners. Also keep in mind that you may be able to pay for a ticket using miles and get a better value than this, earning miles on your ticket and getting elite credit.

What do you think? Would you make a booking at these rates?
