Flights – 90% of the time book direct, occasionally a portal booking might be compelling if the price (cash or points at 1.5c/points boost) is right.
Hotels – compare prices first, then can figure out best points opportunity. Getting at least 10% back on non-direct bookings feels almost standard these days – 8% seems low quite frankly and is barely a perk especially given Chase Travel pricing is usually even more inflated than other sites.
Can usually do 10% or better with a portal through Rakuten. Could even go through Rove which codes as a hotel so you get 4% from Chase on top of the Rove miles. I always plug AA Hotels (10x with Exec Card plus the miles offered through the AA Hotels site itself which can be significant and offer outsized value). Gondola worth looking at as well.
