Quick Thoughts

The Flying Blue program now has standard “saver award” rates between the U.S. and Europe. Those flights cost:

  • 20k miles in economy
  • 35k in premium economy
  • 50k in business class.

As a result, discounted economy flights will cost 15,000 miles each way, while premium economy flights will be 26,250 miles.

Although promo availability can dry up quickly on these sales, there’s plenty of it right now. Here’s what economy from LAX to Paris looks like in April (via KLM).

In case you’re wondering how to get that calendar view, when doing your initial search you simply have to leave the travel dates blank. The search engine will then give you the ability to page through the calendar a month at a time. This trick used to work for both Air France and KLM, but currently the Air France calendar isn’t showing any prices. Hopefully it comes back soon, but in the mean time you can just search monthly using KLM, understanding that there may be occasional availability variance between the two.

Although the promo page makes it look like the saver pricing is only good to/from Paris and Amsterdam, in practice it works for many European destinations. Sometimes, going further can even open up more days of saver availability than just searching for the non-stop hub flights.

For instance here’s LAX-Milan in April. I can find four more days of promo award availability vs. searching to Paris only:
