Giant grocery stores are offering 5x fuel points on all gift cards except Visa, Mastercard, reloadable, and Giant gift cards through 11/28/19. While that’s not a great deal on many third party gift cards, there are some options where, when stacked with rewards earned from a credit card that earns one of the best category bonuses at supermarkets, could be attractive.
The Deal
- Earn 5x fuel points on all gift cards except Visa, Mastercard, Reloadable, and Giant gift cards at Giant food stores.
- Direct link to weekly ad (offer is on page 12)
Key Terms
- Expires 11/28/19
- Not valid on Visa gift cards, Mastercard gift cards, reloadable products, or Giant gift cards
Quick Thoughts
Earning extra fuel points is always nice for those who use a lot of fuel. I don’t live in an area served by Giant, but my understanding is that you’ll earn 1 point per $1 spent, with every 100 points getting you $0.10 off per gallon on up to 25 gallons (up to a max of $1.50 off per gallon). This means that buying a $100 gift card would get you enough for $0.50 off per gallon — a savings of up to $12.50 on gas.
At first, I was thinking that this was the Giant Food Stores that previously announced the intention to allow customers to use fuel points toward grocery purchases, with points being worth $0.01 each toward groceries. However, that’s a different Giant chain Update: It looks like both Giant chains have the same parent company. I’m not sure if fuel points can be or will be redeemable for groceries, but I do see this promo on the other Giant’s site as well on page 23 of the circular, indicating that it is also valid at Martin’s / not valid on Martin’s gift cards. Keep in mind that Giant’s fuel points expire 30 days from issuance — so be sure to fill up in the near term. Still, with many of us traveling by road in the coming weeks, that might not be hard to do.
The fuel points here won’t be an exciting return on many third party merchants, but there may be some you find attractive especially when stacked with higher rewards for US Supermarket purchases. Just keep Greg’s morning post in mind if you’re thinking about doing it with the Gold card.

I use this program, there are limitations though. The most important limitation is that you are able to pay gas with points only in Shell gas Stations and only in those who are in the program. I’m from NOVA and traveling to NYC I had to stop on the last station in Maryland that accepted this, by loading my SUV there I was able to go round trip and fill up the tank again. For this deal you spend $206.95 in a Happy Gift Card and you get 1036 Gas points that is equal to $1.04 discount per gallon up to 20 gallons. I saved $13.85. Hope this helps.
