Quick Thoughts

Target runs this deal during the holiday period each year, but it’s always great to see them bringing it back. This year it’s valid on both Saturday and Sunday, giving you more time to take advantage of the offer. Update: This year’s offer is even better as the limit is $500 rather than $300. Thanks to Jon for pointing that out in the comments below.

Target places a limit of $300 $500 per person and they enforce it as best they can. They’ve been known to wipe gift card balances in the past where they’ve identified people buying more than $300 $500, so don’t bother trying to buy in excess of that on the same account online.

If buying in-store, it’s best to only use a credit card once to buy these discounted Target gift cards because that seems to have been another way they’ve identified customers buying more than the specified limit of gift cards during one of these promotions in the past.

Speaking of cards, there are several cards offering bonused spend at Target right now. Discover is offering 5% this quarter, but only on purchases from Target.com, so in-store purchases won’t earn 5%. ABOC Platinum Rewards is also offering 5%, but they’ll give that for both in-store and online purchases.

Another option is a Chase Freedom/Freedom Flex card if you’ve not already maxed out your $1,500 allowance this quarter. Although Target isn’t an option for the Freedom card, PayPal is a 5% category and Target accepts payment by PayPal.

I just got the target RED card. Can one use gift cards as payment and still get 5% discount on the red card ?

VIS

I was not clear. Can you pay with a target gift card and still get red card 5% discount benefit ? Planning to buy $500 gift card on my discover, $450 net cost plus $22.50 cash back on Discover and with red card another 5% on $500.

Frank

Does anyone know if you buy these online, if you have the choice of getting the gift cards physically instead of electronically?

abc007

Can you use target gift card to buy third party gift card such as best buy?

VIS

Would discover 5% category for this quarter or AMEX Marriott 8 points bonus work for buying gift cards ?

Newbie

I assume this is a no, but will Target permit the gift cards to be purchased with existing Target gift cards (for instance, to take advantage of the 5x bonus on Ink for buying the gift cards at Staples)? Thanks.

Jon

$500. Not $300.

jeph36

I assume I can try to do at least $50 via Paypal with a Discover point to get the bonus $10 from Paypal while also earning the 5% category and this 10% discount. Would I need to do Paypal Key to make that work? I have not thought it thru yet.

Jeff

But without using paypal key it wouldn’t code as 5% cash back because it would code as paypal and not target right? But the $10 offer would apply… So no go on double dipping
