Quick Thoughts
We’ve written about Bilt Rewards a few times recently, a service that offers transferable points when paying your rent and/or when spending on their credit card.
My wife and I don’t rent and so I had no personal interest in signing up for Bilt Rewards, but this deal prompted me to set up an account with them just so that I knew what I was writing about. Now that I’ve done that for myself, we’ve also set up an account for my wife because I’m hoping it could come in handy for future promotions like this (more about that in a second).
As for this American Airlines promotion, it’s simply to participate in. I’m assuming you already have an AAdvantage account, so all you need to do is spend a minute downloading the Bilt Rewards app and set up an account with them. On the home page there’s a tab for ‘Flights’. Tap on that and tap the American Airlines AAdvantage logo; you’ll then be prompted to connect your account. What was a little strange is that you have to provide Bilt with your AAdvantage password and they don’t use a go-between service like how Plaid is used when connecting financial accounts. I was a little dubious about providing them with my password but proceeded anyway, but I’m sure this could be off-putting for people who are even more security-minded than myself.
After linking my account, 500 Bilt Rewards points posted to my account immediately. Note that it’s Bilt points you receive with this offer – it doesn’t automatically add American Airlines miles to your AAdvantage account. American Airlines is a transfer partner of Bilt Rewards, but you have to have a minimum of 2,000 Bilt points in order to transfer to them unless you have Bilt Silver status or higher, in which case you can transfer only 1,000 points if you want.
The reason I decided to go ahead with referring my wife is because I’m hoping it’ll be possible to hit 2,000 points in the future without it taking too much effort. Bilt Rewards currently offers 100 bonus points each time you link any of the following nine loyalty programs in their app:
- American Airlines (500 points temporarily for this promotion)
- Air Canada Aeroplan
- United MileagePlus
- Emirates Skywards
- Air France/KLM Flying Blue
- Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles
- Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
- Virgin Points
- Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
I’m therefore hoping that this American Airlines promotion will be the first of similar promos giving 500 points for linking your loyalty accounts in their app in the future. All they’d need to do would be to run similar promotions for other programs three times and you’d have enough Bilt Rewards points to actually transfer to other programs from those promos alone. In theory, only two further promotions giving 500 bonus points would be sufficient if you earned 100 points for linking at least five of the remaining programs, but I don’t see any reason to rush to link accounts for 100 points in case they offer 500 points or more.
Is it possible to add a authorized user to a bilt account that is renter and get the points.
So what’s the best redemption in value generally?
It depends on how you value their different transfer partners:
Just for clarity — you can set this account up completely separately from applying for the credit card? You can be a Bilt rewards member without the credit card (albeit with limited earning opportunities)?
Yep! When opening an account, it gives you two options – one is to join and apply for their card and the other is just to join.
Thanks for info – got 500 points in 3 minutes. Hope to see more promos from Bilt soon!
