For the past week Choice Privileges has improved the ratio at which you can convert your points to United MileagePlus miles to 5,000:2,000. While that’s not a life-changing redemption option, it does mean that you can indirectly transfer Citi ThankYou points to United on a 1,000:800 basis.

United Airlines Airplane

The Deal

  • Transfer Choice Privileges points to United MileagePlus on a 5,000:2,000 basis.
  • Direct link to offer.

Key Terms

  • For a limited time, Choice Privileges members are eligible to redeem 5,000 or more Choice Privileges points into United MileagePlus miles at double the normal rate; while this promotion lasts – for every 5,000 Choice Privileges points you redeem, you’ll get 2,000 MileagePlus miles, instead of the standard amount of 1000.
  • Minimum redemption is 5,000 Choice Privileges points (for 2,000 MileagePlus miles) and redemptions above 5,000 must be in 1,000 point increments.
  • Transactions must be completed between 09:00 a.m. ET July 7, 2022 and 11:59 p.m. ET, August 31, 2022 to be eligible to receive the offer.
  • All other exchange transaction qualifications apply.
  • Members must also have an active United MileagePlus account; miles will be posted to your United account within 48 hours after your transaction is complete.
  • Once the miles transfer request is initiated it cannot be reversed.

Quick Thoughts

Miles Talk noticed this opportunity recently. The reason it works in this way is because if you have a Citi Premier or Prestige card, you can transfer Citi ThankYou points to Choice on a 1:2 basis.

You could therefore transfer 5,000 ThankYou points to Choice Privileges and end up with 10,000 Choice points. Those Choice points could then be transferred to United to end up with 4,000 MileagePlus miles, thereby meaning you’re transferring from Citi to United on a 1,000:800 basis.

That’s not a spectacular option, but if you need United miles and don’t have the option of transferring from Chase Ultimate Rewards, it could make sense if there’s a good value award flight that you want to book.

The ratio gets even better if you also have a Citi Rewards+ card because that offers a 10% points rebate when redeeming up to 100,000 ThankYou points each year. In the scenario listed above, redeeming 5,000 ThankYou points would get you 500 points rebated. That improves the ratio to a 900:800 basis.

Has Choice offered this before? Can’t decide what to do with my Radisson points. If this promotion comes back it means I could keep my points in the Americas program, once they become Choice I’d convert to UA someday at this rate.

[…] and notes from around the interweb: Transfer Citi Thank You points to United at a 5:4 rate by launching through Choice […]

Just completed a transfer of 5000 Choice points – but Choice system only showed 1000 United miles. Wanted to try this out before depositing more Choice points given what folks were seeing. The transfer happened within minutes to United and still only shows 1000 into my MileagePlus account. Hoping the bonus shows within the 48 hours.

I don’t care about Citi points. Been sitting on 200k for a year or so. I value United. I live in a small town with United service and these flights are never available on life miles/Turkish. This is a no brainer for me. Not trying to get amazing value, just .ore United miles. And chase points are for Hyatt …

Daniel

I did the same as @Mark and the bonus points did not post for me (just the “regular” 5000:1000 ratio).

I called Choice and they opened a case and “assured” me the correct points would be sent over to United. I guess we’ll see…

Others may want to wait until they update the transfer bonus ratios in there system.

Nathan

Daniel, did you end up getting the bonus points?

Daniel

No

Nathan

Daniel, Is Choice claiming that you will still get them?

Daniel

I now have them. Took about 21 days. And that was after a lot of contact with them. Don’t know if that helped or not.

Mark

I’m not sure if I did something incorrectly, but I yesterday I tried to take advantage of the transfer bonus and transferred 16k Choice points but only got 3200 United points.

The bonus points never posted. Now the link to transfer points doesn’t say anything about bonus points. Choice must have pulled it early? Kind of shady on their part. I tried calling Choice but the agent had no idea what I was talking about.

Landing page still shows the promo. Yesterday when I looked at transfer page it gave a 404 error message so it could be a technical issue going on.
