Kroger launched a new gift card promotion yesterday, offering 5% off all eGift cards that they sell online. Even better, they’re currently offering 4x fuel points on all gift card purchases, so you can save even more.
The Deal
- Save 5% on all eGift cards sold by Kroger online when using promo code 5OFFEGIFT.
- Direct link to offer.
Key Terms
- Expires April 5, 2020.
- Maximum $1,002 purchase.
- Offer valid on eGift cards only.
Quick Thoughts
While 5% isn’t a huge discount, every little bit helps. There are a few brands that Kroger doesn’t sell eGift cards for, with Amazon and Best Buy being the most notable. Other high value brands like Home Depot and eBay are available though, so that can be a good deal.
If you’re buying gift cards for personal use rather than reselling, by sure to check out sites like Raise because you can sometimes get much larger discounts, especially on gift cards for restaurants. You can also earn cashback or rewards by clicking through to Raise from a shopping portal, making that option a little better.
Having said that, Kroger has something else working in its favor if you live near its stores or those of its affiliates like Fry’s, Smith’s, King Soopers, etc. That’s because they’re currently offering 4x fuel points on all third party gift card purchases. That can save you up to 14% on gas, so if you’re able to max out the fuel points then you’d be saving almost 20%. That’s a great return, especially seeing as it’s good on up to (a slightly weird limit of) $1,002.
That 14% discount is based on being able to fill up your tank(s) with 35 gallons of gas. If you can’t refuel that much, your savings will be less. For example, our car takes 12 gallons at most and that’s when we’re running on fumes. Our maximum fuel points savings are therefore more like 4.75%, so even with the 5% discount we’d struggle to save 10% overall. That’s certainly not bad, but nowhere near as lucrative (especially for gift card reselling) as it would be if we could max out that 35 gallon limit.
Kroger’s eGift card purchases are processed by Blackhawk Network, so it won’t code as a grocery purchase – something to bear in mind in case you were planning on using a Chase Freedom card now that it’s earning 5% at grocery stores this quarter.
Assume you have tested this to verify it gets the 4x fuel?
I haven’t bought any yet, but every page for eGift cards shows that they earn 4x fuel points. If the correct number of points doesn’t get credited, you’d just need to give the Kroger Plus team a call and they’ll fix it.
Will this also qualify for the chase freedom grocery spend for q2?
I do not think so bc it codes as BlackHawk gift cards, instead (of Krogers, etc.)
