Many retailers have already started running sales for the holidays, so the Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines shopping portals all launched new promotions this week to encourage you to shop through them by offering bonus miles.

The following terms are from the Alaska Airlines shopping portal offer; the terms for the American Airlines and Delta offers are similar, although the dates and spending thresholds/bonuses are different:

  • This one-time bonus award will be determined using one of the following tiers, based on Member’s cumulative qualifying purchases made during the Bonus Period: Tier 1 bonus: 300 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $100; Tier 2 bonus: 750 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $300; or Tier 3 bonus: 1,500 miles for qualifying purchases of $500 or more.
  • “Qualifying purchases” do not include returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products that are not eligible for bonus miles. Please see the Mileage Plan Shopping site for details on product eligibility and other restrictions.
  • Please allow up to 10 weeks after the Bonus Period for bonus miles to post to your Mileage Plan Shopping account.
  • The Tier 3 bonus provides the maximum number of miles that will be awarded.

Quick Thoughts

On a per-dollar basis, the American Airlines shopping portal is offering the best return as you’ll earn 5x, 4x or 4x per dollar depending on which spending threshold you hit.

Alaska Airlines miles can be a little harder for people to come by and can be worth more on a cents per point basis than American Airlines. Some people will therefore prefer spending $500 through the Alaska portal to earn 1,500 Mileage Plan miles rather than 2,000 AAdvantage miles.

An added benefit of the Alaska Airlines shopping portal is that they have a card-linked program to earn miles on in-store shopping, something which isn’t available on other airline portals.

These aren’t the only shopping portal promotions right now as the United and Southwest portals are offering bonus miles, while the Upromise portal is offering up to $75 bonus cashback.

Stephen, do you know if vgc is ok even though the terms don’t allow? For example, vgc from Sam’s Club?
