This morning, my wife and I received the following targeted offer for Hertz on 1 card each — and this should stack with some other key offers for a nice savings:
The Deal
- Get 10% back at Hertz as a statement credit at participating Hertz Corporate-owned locations in the US by 12/31/17
- Should stack with 5% back from Amex OPEN savings & Hertz United offer
Key terms
- Only valid at participating corporate-owned locations within the US (see that link for a list)
- Only valid for vehicle rentals (excludes Hertz Car Sales, Rent2Buy, equipment rental, entertainment services, Dollar, Thrifty, etc.)
- Valid through 12/31/17
Quick Thoughts
Ten percent isn’t a huge savings on its own, but this offer is interesting because we found it on American Express business cards. Thanks to the Amex OPEN Savings benefit, those cards already qualify for a 5% statement credit (or 2 extra Membership Rewards points per dollar if you prefer) on purchases with Hertz – and that should stack with this offer for a total of 15% back.
There is also an ongoing targeted Hertz offer to earn United miles where you could earn more than 5,000 miles per rental when using both Hertz’s PC and CDP (See: Big Hertz / United 5K+ per rental offer returns [Targeted] for more info). If you can earn 5K+ miles and get 15% back, that could be a really nice combo.
How long it took to get the 3k bonus miles posted to your account? I had a couple of rentals but I only got 500 base miles and 500 gold/silver bonus miles for each rental. I used the United CDP and PC and booked the car via Hertz.com. But 3k miles just not posted.
[…] New Hertz offer stacks for 15% back total + United miles by Frequent Miler. A few stacking options here might turn this into an OK deal. […]
[…] The Hertz/United Combo: Check to see if you have this offer on certain business credit cards. If so, you could stack this offer with another Hertz targeted offer plus another offer built into your business card which would allow you to earn 5,000 United miles and get 15% back from your Hertz rental. The Amex offer says the rental has to be booked directly with Hertz, so I’m not sure you can stack it with the United offer, which has to be booked through United.com.
The United offer doesn’t have to be booked through United.com. You can use the United PC on Hertz.com for 3K miles and use whatever CDP works for you. Just a couple of weeks ago, I used the Hertz PC on Hertz.com because I wanted to use my Amex Platinum CDP for the 4-hour grace period on the rental return. I got the 3K bonus miles from the PC, the 500 base miles from renting with Hertz, and the 250 bonus miles for being a MileagePlus Explorer card holder for a total of 3750 miles. I didn’t get the additional 1500 bonus miles I could have gotten with the United CDP, but the 4-hour grace period was more valuable in my circumstance, so I used the cheaper CDP.
I also suspect that booking through United.com will probably trigger the 10% Amex Offer regardless of what the terms state since the rental car charge comes through as Hertz.
I don’t rent cars often, so less experienced here in that realm, but have tried to do some price comparison for an upcoming trip where I need a car for 4 days. Hertz (through the United offer) quotes were $190+ while quotes from, Kayak and other similar sites showed rates as low as $75 including taxes/fees for the same car type/size. Typical with Hertz? Would have to do some more math to see if the difference, w/ the Amex offer + United miles potential is worth the cost difference.
See my response to RUNTHEROAD below. You can try different CDP codes to see what yields the best price for you.
