There is a new referral offer out today for some Amex Platinum cardholders whereby the cardholder referring a new member can get +4 points per dollar spent on purchases at restaurants worldwide and when you shop small in the US for 6 months on up to $25,000 in purchases. That’s a very nice deal if you’re referring your friend or family member to the best offer anyway (and also earning a points bonus on top).
Quick Thoughts
As you can see above, in this case the person referring a new cardholder would receive 30,000 points (up to an annual cap of 55,000) plus get an extra 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide and when they shop small in the US on up to $25K in combined purchases over the next 6 months. The terms note that you can only get this once per account, so you may not be able to trigger this offer on more than one card.
Still, that makes a referral worth up to 130,000 points for the person making the referral in the example above on top of the 125,000 points + 10x for the person opening a new account. Some people have seen referral offers as high as 45,000 points recently — not sure if those people are also seeing the offer for +4x.
This offer is targeted and appears to only exist on vanilla Platinum card accounts. Interestingly, my wife had this offer on her Platinum card account but another family member didn’t. My guess is that this is because my wife’s Platinum card account was opened late last year whereas this other family member opened their account just a couple of months ago. I’m betting that only those with Platinum card accounts opened before some date have the ability to generate the +4x referral, but I don’t know where the cutoff is. The most recent open date of a card with the +4 offer from the Frequent Miler team was opened in early April.
If you’re playing in 2-player mode and you can spend more than $8,666.67 at restaurants and small businesses, you will earn more points with the Resy offer than you can earn with this referral offer since the Resy offer gives you 15x on up to $25K in worldwide restaurant and shop small US purchases. See our post about that deal for more.
The nice thing here is that I believe you will trigger the offer no mater which card your friend opens – so if you have a friend interested in some other Amex card, this may be a great way to get rewarded for the referral and ongoing spend.

Has anyone else seen a 45K referral bonus?
Yep, I have the same offer on my Platinum card
