Office Depot / Office Max is offering an instant $15 discount when you buy a $300 Visa Gift Card. Shipping is free and there is no activation fee. Keep in mind the recent troubles with MetaBank cards – I only recommend buying with a pretty firm plan as to how you’ll use them.

The Deal

Key Terms

  • Expires 12/17, but there is no way this will last that long
  • Max discount says $15 per customer. May really be 1 per transaction, though YMMV in getting banned by Gift Card Mall

Quick Thoughts

As noted above, there is no fee for shipping nor is there an activation fee, so this is essentially an opportunity to buy $300 for $285. Think of it as getting an easy opportunity to meet some sort of spending requirement that comes with a free pizza.

Note that you will not earn an office supply category bonus. These purchases are processed through GiftCardMall, so no dice there. Just use a card on which you’re trying to meet a spending requirement (proceed with caution if it is an Amex spending requirement) or the card you have which earns the best return on everyday spend.

Again, these types of cards may be difficult to liquidate, though they would obviously still work for regular stuff and come out as a nice easy win between rewards and dollars off.

Has anyone been able to track these purchases? The cards are supposed to be “USPS trackable 5-8 business days,” but when I check on my order at giftcardmall it says the tracking number is not available yet even though I placed my order a week and a half ago. I’d be interested in hearing if others are experiencing the same thing or if I’m an outlier. Thanks!

Captain Greg

Okay, I sorted it out. In case anyone is wondering, someone at DoC called giftcardmall and was told that there was an issue but all the cards should be shipped today or tomorrow. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/officedepot-com-gcm-save-15-instantly-on-300-visa-giftcard-2/#comment-1114002

Just used my PayPal Key MC to put $285 on my Chase Freedom for 5X UR points.

In terms of liquidation, are you able to use PayPal to send money to a friend with the money coming out of these visa gift cards or is that a violation? And yes I mean a legit transfer to another valid account not back to myself somehow. I’ve got some fantasy football payouts to do but don’t want to get shut down or blacklisted over it…

Ordered on my Citi DC, order received confirmation so far…….

just received order approved email

Ben

What are you referring to about trouble liquidating these? Is this in reference to Walmart? Or is there something going on with Metabank cards that applies at all retailers that sell MOs?

Erika Hamilton

I think he is just referencing the WM issues

John

I keep getting the order declined/canceled. WTF? Using a jetBlue mastercard from Barclay and shipping to the same address as the billing address. Anyone know why I’d be getting declined??

Captain Greg

Jetblue plus card worked for me. If you’ve ordered from them before, try a different email if you have it.

$300 vgc for $300 vgc and free $15 is a good deal
