Rover Amex Offer

Quick Thoughts

Rover has been incredibly helpful for us over the last few years by helping us find people to look after our dog. We’ve used the service when traveling overseas, as well as while traveling domestically when we’ll be out all day and the activity isn’t dog-friendly.

I checked my Rover account last night and it says we’ve dropped more than $2,000 on the service over the last two years (ouch!), but these Amex Offers have helped mitigate some of those costs.

We only had the statement credit version of the offer on our cards, but there might be a 1,000 Membership Rewards version of the offer too. If you have both versions, you’ll be able to add a statement credit version to one card and a Membership Rewards version to another.

Another benefit from booking through Rover is that they now have a partnership with American Airlines. You won’t earn enough for a business class ticket, but I’ve earned almost 1,000 bonus miles the last couple of months through the partnership. One of the nice features is that you only have to link your account one time – it’ll then track without having to remember to go through an AA/Rover portal.

The American Airlines partnership also offers 2,000 bonus miles if you’re a first time user. Alternatively, you can get $20 off your first booking when using someone’s referral link. Here’s my link – I’ll get $20 in Rover credit too. IMO, the AA signup bonus is worth more than $20 so I’d personally go with that one, but I certainly won’t complain if someone prefers $20 off instead and uses my referral link.

When these Rover Amex Offers have come around in the past, there’s been the occasional commenter who’s shared a terrible experience they’ve had. That’s definitely a risk with using a service like Rover, but to be fair you run that risk even with professional dog sitters. Rover has a rating system similar to eBay, Airbnb, etc., so you can only review someone if you’ve paid for a service with them. We’ve always had pretty good experiences and we only book people with numerous positive reviews.

The biggest downside to this Amex Offer is that you can’t purchase gift cards to lock in the 20% discount. We’ll be going to Bridge Day at the New River Gorge in West Virginia in October. Dogs aren’t allowed at the event, so we need someone to look after Truffles for the day. The problem (to an extent) is that it’ll cost less than $50, so we won’t be able to use the offer to save money. Having said that, the offer does work for one or more transactions, so this reservation will count towards the $50 threshold if we need someone to look after her at some other point in the next few months. Rover takes payments straight away, so if you need someone to look after your dog after September 10 when the offer expires, you can still take advantage of the offer when booking now.
