Not targeted 🙁
The real problem with this promo is that it requires paying an annual fee rather than canceling the card when the fee hits.
That is the case for me as well. My fee hits within the time of the promotion. Factoring in the amount of spend plus I don’t have a designated use for the points and there is some uncertainty what will happen to them since they merged/were bought out, I’m leaning toward passing on this one.
how so?
I was targeted for but I’m not too sure I’m going to take the bait. I have to factor in the opportunity costs of missing out on $5K worth of Visa GCs on my Chase Ink which gives me 5x UR points. Any reason I should accept this offer??
Well, to get the Ink bonus, you have to buy the gift cards at office supply stores (at high prices) and you can buy ANYTHING (including cheaper gift cards) with the SPG deal. It might pay for you to do both: if you have the time, of course.
@iahphx Thanks! I would totally MS this SPG promo, so the GC cost is the same whether I buying it w/the SPG Amex or my Chase Ink. Since it’s not easy for me to liquidate MOs, I have to factor in the opportunity cost. For people for whom MSing this deal via Visa GCs is easy, I’d definitely say, go for it!. I’m not a GC reseller, so buying $10K worth of GCs to retailers also doesn’t really work. In any case, it’s an okay deal. I’m not saying it’s bad. But it’s not an amazing deal either, from my perspective.
Right, it’s not amazing. It’s a lot of spend for most people, unless they’re buying gift cards and turning them into money orders. Is it worth the effort for 2x SPG points? I don’t know.
Interesting promo. I was targeted. I know that many fancy pants travellers value SPG points at 2 cents each, and they’re certainly worth that if you would otherwise PAY for these stays at Starwood hotels. Personally, I don’t buy a lot of $200 hotel rooms, so I can’t value the points that highly. I think something like 1.5 cents/point is more realistic. So this makes your SPG biz card a 3% card on everything, as long as you can get to “exactly” $5000 in spend (or exactly $10,000). On $5000 in spend, I’d prefer 10,000 SPG points to, say, $150, so it’s useful. I suspect most other frequent travellers would feel the same.
The link is giving me a “Bad Request” error page. Anyone else seeing it or does this just mean I’m not part of the targeted group? I checked on two separate accounts.
It’s been a long day and maybe I’m just slow but are you saying that if I spend $10,000 I get 10,000 Spg points? If so, isn’t that just the everyday spend rate? I think I missed something.
ok sorry I think I got it. You’d have a total of 20K Spg points (points from spend plus these bonus points).
I had the same question. The offer doesn’t say earn an additional 5k but the assumption would be that it’s in addition to the standard 1x points earned Strange wording.
If I purchase gift cards would that qualify as a qualifying purchase?
says (in key terms): purchases or reloading of prepaid cards; guess worst case is to just earn the std pts w/o the bonus
