Spirit Airlines has had a rough year. Having filed for bankruptcy twice in 2025, they’ve also announced that they’ll be cutting 25% of flights and furloughing pilots and flight attendants.
Due to their dire need of getting butts in seats, they’ve announced a great new benefit for Spirit Travel More cardholders that’s taken effect from today: two free checked bags.

There are a few features of this benefit to be aware of. One of the most important things to be aware of is that the only the primary cardholder is eligible for two free checked bags; any traveling companions on the same itinerary won’t also be eligible for free checked bags unless they pay for that separately or if it’s included as part of a bundle when booking their ticket. That’s not ideal, but I’m sure many couples and families will find it workable. You’ll just need to try to limit your combined checked baggage to two suitcases and have those allocated to the primary cardholder.
Cardholders also need to book directly with Spirit in order to be eligible for two free checked bags; tickets booked through Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) or elsewhere aren’t set to be eligible.
The credit card needs to be linked to the cardholder’s Free Spirit account which can take up to seven days. If you apply for the card and have an imminent flight, you’ll therefore have to cross your fingers and hope that the card shows on your loyalty account in time.
When booking Spirit First, you automatically get a free checked bag. If you’re a Spirit Travel More cardholder and you pay for a First seat with your Spirit card, you’ll be eligible for a total of three free checked bags.
Overall, this is a very positive development for Free Spirit Travel More cardholders; let’s just hope that Spirit continues to survive in order for cardholders to make use of it.
