Quick Thoughts
I received this offer on my Citi Premier card, so the offer earns 5x ThankYou points. I wouldn’t be surprised if other types of Citi credit cards get targeted with this offer though, so there might be versions of this like 5% cashback on the Citi Dividend, 5x on American Airlines Platinum Select, etc.
Note that the offer is for 5x points rather than 5x bonus points, so you only earn 5x points rather than a total of 6x. The limit of 2,500 bonus points is based on the 4x bonus points you earn, so this offer is good on up to $625 of spend.
While that’s not a huge limit, it’ll prove to be useful for many of those targeted considering eligible stores will include Best Buy, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Macy’s, JCPenney, etc. Even better, the offer is good through November 30 which means you can use it for Black Friday shopping if you’ve not already maxed it out by then.
If you receive an email about this offer, be sure to click the activation link within the email.
Update: Following my original post, my suspicions were correct that other cards would receive targeted offers too, but the offers themselves have been different in some cases.
For example, Greg received a 5x offer for grocery/drugstore/gas station/mass transit on his Citi Prestige card, while other readers have commented below to confirm they’ve received the same offer. That includes 5x on a ThankYou Preferred card, as well as 3x on an American Airlines card.
For most people, this alternative offer will definitely be better as grocery stores and drugstores will be much easier to max out.

Got an offer for 5x dining and gas stations with my TY citibiz card. That’ll be interesting because the Q4 category is 3x dining and entertainment. Will I therefore get 7x dining in October and November? Hmm…
Got the grocery version on a Diamond Preferred. Good timing, as I’m under $100 spend for the year for Easy Deals “ENHANCED”, and Acme has that Just4U offer…
I received 3x AA miles on grocery, drug stores and mass transit. One problem though–last week I product changed the card (AA Plat) to Double Cash card. I clicked activate to see what it would do, and it said it was active. Do I get an extra 2% back at these places? Or 3% total? Or is it just dead?
Interesting side note–on this same card back in April I received an offer for 10x on internet purchases. However, around the same time they changed the card (without me asking) to a tap pay version, which resulted in a change in card number. The promo did work, even though it was listed for one card number and I used it for a different one (but both were AA plat cards).
I’m not sure how that would work regarding the AA to Double Cash conversion – let us know what happens if you test it out.
I read the offer differently. The offer is “earn 5x per $ up to maximum of 2500 TY points”. So $500 gets you to 2500 points, not $625.
Although that’s the way that the offer initially appears to work, the terms suggest otherwise:
Seeing as the 2,500 additional points are bonus points and you’re earning 4 bonus points per dollar, that works out to be $625 of spend.
FYI, I called Citi regarding this issue because I don’t want to be disappointed by spending $625 and earning 4x bonus on only $500 of that amount. The CSR firmly stated that the maximum of 2500 TY points is earned only for $500 spend in the bonus categories, not $625. He said that any spend over $500 will earn only 1 point per $. That applies to this Citi offer as well as the Citi offer of 5x on grocery, drug stores, etc. I intend to spend $500 in the bonus categories to max out the bonus and then switch to another card for any additional spend.
I was offered 5% grocery stores, gas, drugstores and mass transit on Citi Preferred.
