A new HP Amex Offer appeared yesterday that can save you up to 20% on a new computer. There are also some good shopping portal rates for HP right now, so this could save you a good chunk of change on a new computer.
The Deal
- Spend $250+ in one or more transactions at HP online and get $50 back.
Key Terms
- Expires September 30, 2019
- Excludes HP Labs, purchases of replacement or spare parts, training & certificate programs, B2B & public sector purchases. Offer also excludes HP Partner and PartnerOne Programs, HP SmartFriend, HP Financial Services, HP Cloud Services, HP Enterprise Services, Technology and IT Consulting Services, Big Data Solutions, and Information Security and Risk Management Services.
- See merchant website for shipping policy. Some merchants may not ship to all areas.
Quick Thoughts
This HP Amex Offer has come around frustratingly late for me. With only 4GB RAM, my old HP laptop had slowed to a crawl, but I’d put off buying a new one in the hope that an Amex Offer like this would appear to save me more. It had gotten to the point where I was having to restart my laptop several times a day in order to get anything done, so I finally bit the bullet and ordered a new one a couple of weeks ago and had it delivered this past week. Sure enough, this Amex Offer subsequently appeared too late for me to take advantage of it.
My woes aside, this is a decent deal for a couple of reasons. First, you can buy a $250 HP gift card to lock in the 20% discount. HP allows you to use up to five gift cards per order, so that could be helpful if you’re buying a more expensive computer and multiple family members/employees have the offer on their cards.
Second, there are some great shopping portal rates at the moment for HP. TopCashback, Ebates and Mr Rebates are all offering 10%, while airline portals and the Chase portal are offering anything from 3x up to 6x. In the past, gift card purchases tracked through shopping portals, then tracked again when they were redeemed. I’ve no idea if that’s still the case, but be sure to click through from a portal to give it a try if you’ll be spending $250+ at HP. If portals do still pay out for gift card purchases, it’d make this profitable for reselling seeing as CardCash is paying $195 for a $250 HP gift card. If gift card purchases don’t track though, you’d make a $5 loss, so it’s up to you as to whether or not you want to take that risk.
Speaking of clicking through to HP, the Amex Offer states that you have to go to hp.com/go/amex, but all that does is take you to an HP landing page where they can track how much extra business this offer is generating. Clicking through from a portal will still trigger the Amex Offer, so don’t go directly to the site using the link mentioned in the terms.
This offer only appeared on business cards that my wife and I have, so it might only be targeted at that type of card. There might also be a 5,000 Membership Rewards version of the offer, but we don’t have an Amex business card that earns Membership Rewards and so I’m not certain about that.
