T-Mobile USA has announced that beginning on June 13, 2016 their customers on a T-Mobile branded plan will receive one hour of free Gogo internet plus unlimited messaging.

The Offer

T-Mobile is taking service to new heights with FREE Wi-Fi for an hour, plus unlimited in-flight texting, picture messaging, and access to T-Mobile Visual Voicemail on Gogo®-equipped flights.

How to Connect

Before you board, make sure to:

  1. Have a valid T-Mobile phone number.
  2. If you don’t have Wi-Fi Calling on your phone, no worries!  You can still use data, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Viber.
  3. If you have a Wi-Fi Calling capable device, you can send and receive SMS, MMS, and VVM on top of the other benefits. You need to have a T-Mobile branded phone with Wi-Fi Calling, valid E911 address on file with T-Mobile for your mobile number. To review or add your 911 address please access your T-Mobile account, either via T-Mobile.com or via MyAccount on your handset. You will also need to have made at least one Wi-Fi call with your current SIM card on your current phone.

 Once you’re on board:

  1. Follow the instructions from your cabin crew to hear when the Gogo service is available.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi and make sure you’re connected to the ‘gogoinflight’ Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open the browser. Select the ‘T-Mobile FREE hour of in-flight Wi-Fi and unlimited texting’ option.
  4. Click the “LET’S GO” button and follow the on screen instructions.
  5. Your device should connect to T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling.
  6. It can take a few minutes for your device to register on the ground for T-Mobile In-flight Texting.  If you don’t want to wait, just reset (turn off, then on) your Wi-Fi or start messaging using iMessage, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp and Viber.
  7. Android Users: You should see a WFC icon, in the upper left corner.
  8. iPhone Users: Your network indicator should say “T-Mobile Wi-Fi”.
  9. Start texting and browsing!

What I don’t know from reading this, is the one hour gogo WiFi a one time deal or is this one hour per flight? I’ve been using them for years and love their included texting and data usage when traveling out of the country. It has been extremely valuable to me when in Europe, Mexico, on cruises when in port, and had great service in New Zealand and Australia. Also, the WiFi calling option is great when out of the country.

If you have WiFi at your house, the T-Mobile phones will automatically treat it like a cell tower. The phone doesn’t care whether it sees a T-Mobile tower or not. Even text messaging works flawlessly over WiFi on their equipment. This is UNlike Verizon’s spotty implementation of WiFi Calling, which is exactly that, only calls over WiFI.

I wish T-Mobile had better coverage at my house. So all of this is moot. 🙁 Awesome benefits for those of you that can take advantage of it.

Another T-Mobile benefit is that there are no roaming charges for many EU countries with most plans. I have used my phone frequently in Munich to call and text as if I was home in the US.

Would this Gogo benefit be available to those of us who have a $20/month data-only Simple Choice plan? I have it on an iPad, and use it for data when traveling internationally.

You can call tmobile but I believe they said any customer prepaid or postpaid. They did not want to make a bunch of terms and conditions.
