US Bank is offering increased bonuses on both the Altitude Connect and Business Leverage  cards based on Team USA’s medal count at the Winter Olympics.  The Altitude Connect is offering 50,000 points after $2,000 spend (which had been the normal bonus) with an additional 5,000 points if Team USA get 0-35 medals and 10,000 points for 36+ medals.  The Business Leverage is offering $750 after $7,500 spend with an additonal $75 for 0-35 medals and $150 for 36+.

FM Mini Review: This card offers decent returns on gas station and travel spend and it features no foreign transaction fees, but points are now only worth 0.8cpp. However, return on most other spend is relatively weak.

FM Mini Review: Since the points are worth 1c each, this card isn't terribly rewarding for ongoing spend. Note that points can not be combined with the Altitude Reserve.

Quick Thoughts

As a big Winter Olympics fan, I think it’s fun that US Bank is tying a card bonus into the festivities.  That said, Team USA has only eclipsed 35 medals once in history (2010), so it’s most likely a 5,000 point bonus for the Connect and a $75 bonus for the Business Leverage.  You didn’t think that 35 medal number came out of thin air, did you?

I’ve never found either of these cards to be terribly compelling, especially in comparison to the Altitude Reserve.  The additional bonuses are a nice sweetener, though, and you can wait until the Olympics are over before applying if you like (in case TUSA really knocks it out of the park this year).

For Altitude Connect…. why is first year value estimate $510 if you earn $590 just for meeting min spend?

Also, $590 return on $2k spend is pretty sweet.
