Quick Thoughts
It’s always nice to see a discount on Hotels.com gift cards. While I don’t often book through Hotels.com because such bookings do not earn hotel points and elite credit and are usually ineligible for elite benefits. That said, stacking 15% off these cards and an effective 10% back through Hotels.com Welcome Rewards could easily make up for what you’re losing, especially at properties where breakfast is free for everyone and/or you don’t need elite benefits.
Note of caution on combining cards
Hotels.com used to allow you to quickly and easily combine gift cards online, which made it easy to stack deals like this and/or cards purchased at a discount via third parties.
However, a reader at Doctor of Credit brought to my attention that the merge tool is currently “out of service”.
You now have to call to merge gift cards and apparently you need to know how much the gift card was originally worth and when it was activated (which seems impractical to me if you actually received one as a gift as they likely intend).
Another reader there offers a workaround, which looks like it would probably work if you were looking to combine this with something purchased via a site like Raise.
All that said, I Gyft has a limit of 2 here and I would expect that they would be relatively easy to combine them over the phone with a rep.
The final added bonus here is that Ink Cash (and old Ink Plus) cards have been earning 5x at Gyft when you check out via PayPal. No bonus for the Ink Business Preferred to my knowledge (different bonus categories on that card). Update: Gyft no longer appears to code at 5x.
H/T: GC Galore
I purchased some hotels.com cards first hand from BJ’s, but they are still not allowing me to combine on the phone. They ask for the BJ’s warehouse address where they (not me) got their shipment. It is beyond ridiculous.
I called again to get a different rep, who actually combined them for me without asking for address. Still a hassle.
Guess I will never use hotels.com ever again once I get rid of these gcs.
LOL, I literally just finished combining 6 Hotels.com GC’s that I had picked up from various promotions then used them on 2 hotel bookings in SF. Guess I can pick up 2 more!
[…] course, if prices are the same, you’d probably do better by purchasing discounted Hotels.com gift cards and collecting Hotels.com Welcome Rewards. On the other hand, maybe you’ll find a deal […]
Hotels.com merge tool has been out of service FOREVER. I dare say its at least nearing a year I’ve noticed it gone.
I stopped buying hotels.com gift card for this very reason.
I never buy them (I’ve had one that I’ve been holding onto for years and haven’t used), so I hadn’t noticed.
Yes, it’s a pain. I was sitting on 6 cards that I needed to combine and finally did it today for a hotel stay at the end of the month. It’s not THAT painful, though not as easy as it used to be. I’m hoping the site functionality returns. I won’t give up 24.1% savings for a little inconvenience.
