Quick Thoughts
DAmex seems to be making a push to get their cards in position for your Amazon spend. Last month, there was the Fire Sale of sorts (See: Can I interest you in 40 Amazon Fire tablets?). There was another $25 off of $50 that surfaced in the interim and now this 20% off discount. This discount can be split over several purchases up to a maximum benefit of $50 off. In other words, whether you place a single order for $250 in items or you place 5 orders that are $50 each, you’ll have gotten 20% off and will be capped. That said, it’s nice that this works on multiple purchases, so you don’t need to hunt for the perfect use to max it out all at once.
Don’t forget to go to Amazon and click to activate this promotion (as seen in the screen shot above) before making your purchase. If you were targeted, you should see the “click to activate” button when visiting that link.
Note that this promotion is only valid with American Express Membership Rewards points. This one is not compatible with Discover points or Citi Thank You points.

[…] 20% off at Amazon w/ 1 point [Targeted, $50 max discount] (This one ends 10/23/17, but it’s always possible this type of offer fills up before it’s expiration date. I was kicking myself for not remembering to use it on something yesterday, so keep in mind that you have just over a week left) […]
I wasn’t targeted for the promo when I first checked. I didn’t have an AMEX with MR points added as a payment method. I added my best MR earning card and 48 hours later, I was able to “clip” the promo coupon.
I have not been able to use 1 MR point and the remainder as Amazon gift card balance. But this worked on the Fire deal previously. Anything different here?
From what others have said, I think the problem is if your gift card balance is more than the order total it won’t work. You have to use at least 1 point and you have to pay something (presumably at least 1 cent) with your MR-earning credit card. For example, you could buy an item that costs $30 and pay $0.01 using points and $25 using a gift card and $3.99 using your credit card….but if your gift card balance is more than $30, you won’t be able to apply the promo and gift cards (at least, that’s how I understand it from reading the comments of others).
Weird, but got it. Thanks for the quick response! Back to some shopping.
